I had a family interview me and ask me to start the next day, then texted me 20 minute before start time to cancel, then called halfway through the day to have me come in anyway. Nope.

You interviewed for 3 hours and 45 minutes for one 8 hour a week job?

I truly think she had no intentions of hiring you or paying you. She lied and made you believe you got the position when in reality she just wanted you gone without having to pay you. Be thankful you dodged that bullet

She would waste more than 3 hours and the equivalent pay by doing this. Just let it go OP. Better to know she's an ass than to have actually had to work for her!

Shoot me her an emal statement for 3 hours at your hourly rate. Also, tell her that you will take her to Small Claims Court if she doesn't pay you.

I read in some board that said NEVER do the "working interview" because some cheap parents will take advantage on you.

I feel sorry for her poor child.

Hourly workers are paid for their time. They are paid for training and "working" interviews. It doesn't matter if the mom was there, she used reserved and used OPs time and should pay for it.

You dodged a bullet OP. This woman would have been a TERRIBLE employer.

totally agree, these employers are taking advantage of people. The only unpaid interview would be under 1 hour involving an oral discussion with the employer. Not taking care of their kids for free!

All hourly employees and potential employees should be paid for "trials". This woman (and any who agree with her) are simply wrong.

So sorry you had to experience this w/this selfish woman OP.

She sounds like a piece or work to me.

While she theoretically owes you for your time, at this point I would simply count my losses & just be grateful that she didn't hire you on.

Trust me, if she had your job would be the job from HELL. No ifs, ands or buts.

Her word would carry absolutely no weight or you would be manipulated + conned all the time. She is not only a liar, but she also sounds all over the map.

Sure, you may have lost a few hours pay, but what you did gain was an important life lesson learned along w/dodging the ugliest bullet ever.

OP sorry to hear that. You dodged a major bullet. I recently worked a 7 hour trial day where they paid me for none of it. MB worked in the home office and while she was with me at the end, I still did the bath, sterilizing bottles, organizing etc.

She looked shocked when I mentioned the pay. She told me she would pay only if we moved forward. They then offered me the position with not one benefit or even guaranteed wages. She also only offered to pay for 5 of the 7 hours because she nursed during those hours. They were both surprised when I declined their offer. Be happy you dodged a bullet.

I am sorry, OP. She is a horrible woman and you dodged a bullet in this job not working out. If she'd stiff you on three hours she would stiff you on three days or three weeks.

I recently responded to a part time (8 hours per week) nanny job on care. MB requested a phone interview which we did (took about 45 mins). At the end of the phone interview, she requested that I come over for a three hour "working interview" on Saturday morning. She even confirmed my hourly rate and specifically said she would pay me for my time.

I spent the full three hours with her and her daughter. MB was there much of the time but I was left alone with daughter for about 25 mins. At the end of the interview (which went very well) MB said I was they only interview they'd scheduled and they wanted me to start Monday at 8, and I agreed. As I was leaving, I stood awkwardly in the doorway waiting to be paid, but MB just stood there as well. I said "I thought this was a working paid interview?" And she acted completely shocked and said "no, we didn't specify if it was paid." I was frustrated because I remember quite clearly that she said it would be paid, but arguing about it at that moment seemed pointless so I said okay see you Monday.

I just got a voicemail from her tonight (the night before I was supposed to start) saying "thanks for meeting with us yesterday, we were really impressed with you. However today I spoke with my neighbor who wants to do free childcare exchange and so we are going to try that out. If it doesn't seem to be working out in a few weeks I'll let you know but thanks for your time."

I'm obviously pissed. When she neglected to pay me after offering me the job I figured oh well I'll get paid for my time with her family this week. Now knowing that I don't even get the job AND i didn't get paid for my three hours on Saturday morning, well it's twice as upsetting! The voicemail was long; I kept waiting to see if she'd offer to send me a little money for my time yesterday but she never did. I don't think I'll ever agree to a working interview again unless I get it in writing that it will be paid because clearly you can't take people at their word anymore). So pissed!
