when one family left my share of 3 years the new family paid the same rate as the remaining family. it was just the cost of entering our share. had they not wanted to join due to the cost, we would have found another family. there were plenty. have you told her she won't be getting the same amount of money?

She's been working with this family for awhile and is getting a raise...the other family will be new. I think that's fair! I wouldn't expect the same rate from the new family

Another mom just asked if nanny can watch her daughter 2-3 mornings a week for a few hours, so that might be the best way to supplement the income without adding hours. I asked the new family and she is considering it.

If she was smart she was stuffing that $200 into savings every month and living on the 40 hr pay. If not, not your problem.

Okay, my fault. That is less troublesome, and with the benefit of half day Fridays, she may be happy with this arrangement.

Yes nannies expect their pay to be slightly variable, BUT your rate is nothing special in this area and she'd be stupid to swallow the entire cost of this change for you. You're talking $800 less a month. What wage worker do you know that can afford that and continue to pay her bills? She's looking for her next job I promise you that.

I would think so. Being a nanny is very unique in that one year she can make a ton of money, but the next year she could be broke as a joke.

It all depends on luck vs. strategy. In most professions, there is room for advancement if you stay w/the same company and tenure is very important in order to reap benefits.

In the nanny profession, tenure does not exist.

She has had all 3 babies for the past few weeks, so although she is going to be down $200 a month, she has made an extra $300+ a week for the past month.

Yes, she's legal. Her asking rate is $15hr for 1-2 kids. She makes an extra $7-8hr when she has a 3rd child.

When I rent an apartment with a friend and then they bail on the lease should the landlord get half rent until I can find someone? No. Just like you shouldn't worry about nanny's pay, if she wants more she can find someone who pays more.

I am currently an MB in a nanny share. Nanny has been with me for 2 years with 2 other consecutive families. The first year, we both used 40 hrs and she made $600 a week. With the 2nd family, I used 40 hrs a week and they other family used 50 hrs a week and she made $705 total $305 from me and $400 from them). That family is leaving (child is going to school) and we found a new family but they only need 40 hrs, so they will only be paying $305. Since she's been with us for a while, we gave her a raise to $350 a week but unfortunately, she's still making less than she was before. I feel bad but we cant afford much more and a 10% raise seemed reasonable. She will be getting half days on Fridays (which she had with the first family and is happy about but I dont know how to compensate for the reduction in pay.

We do allow her to take a 3rd baby on occasion and that helps supplement her pay but its not guaranteed.

Is it just a reality for nannies that their pay will be variable from year to year?
