You should pay legally and have taxes withheld. You have to pay your taxes anyway (there are employer tax requirements) so it's just better to do it all.

The employee can adjust withholdings as he/she deems fit but you should pay legally.

There are several good payroll services that can handle all of the logistics and paperwork, and that are terrific resources for figuring out how to do this correctly (and simply).

Are the majority of nannies in the NoVa area paid with taxes taken out, or just paid straight wage and expected to handle their own taxes? Which would you say is generally preferred? It would affect how much we are able to afford paying a nanny. Thank you!
