You are at your MB's beck and call ONLY for the hours specified in your contract. For any other hours you are FREE TO SAY NO. Exercise this freedom and stop complaining. Learn to be ASSERTIVE and you will stop being taken advantage of by your MB.

+1 I don't understand the point you are trying to make. If working today was so important to you, why aren't you working? Why wouldn't you want to be with your own children today if you aren't working?

Since she asked you last minute and on very short notice, it is up to you what to do. If she pays you double, would you consider doing it?? If so, let her know upfront that you will be charging 2x your normal rate since it is a Federal holiday.

Or if you really are dead set against it, just let them know that you already have plans with friends to enjoy the holiday with them.

I would simply state that, as it's the day before a holiday and you have your own plans, if they absolutely need you, you will only stay if they are willing to pay 1.5-2 times the required rate for the extra hours. If that means that they are paying 2.25-3 because it would already be overtime, well, that's their choice.

Geez people, there are already at least three other current posts here either whining about working July 3rd or humble bragging about getting the day off paid. Sigh. I am working tomorrow. I'm not sure if DB is working tomorrow; honestly he works from home and 90% of the time he doesn't really seem to be working anyway (often working out in his home gym, or heading out in his car in shorts with his golf clubs or a cooler of beer and a beach chair), so it won't make a different to me anyway whether he is working or not. I think MB is going to the office tomorrow but I'm really not positive.

If tomorrow was actually the Fourth of July, I would expect to have it off, paid. But, it isn't. The actual holiday falls on a Saturday, and so I have THAT day off, unpaid, as usual, and I'm working Friday, as usual.

If they asked you to stay late at the last minute it's pretty easy to just say you can't, have plans, whatever.

Did you not negotiate you holidays on a contract? If not, sucks for you. Maybe at a work anniversary (3 year 4 year) ask for a contract.

You reply and say: "sorry but I already have plans". It is a holiday after all. Do you have a contract?

I'm kind of annoyed right now because MB just sent me a text asking me to work late tomorrow so I can take the kids to a family BBQ at the church. Both parents have the day off tomorrow and are still making me come and now they're asking me to work late. I feel like maybe I need to start looking for a new job. I mean they can't even take their own kids to a family BBQ? I've been with this family 3 years and they just keep getting lazier and lazier. Why even have kids if you're just going to outsource parenting to your nanny?
