It lasts till 3, 3.5 for most kids. You buy what you need now and upgrade later on. In less you are planning to RF till 4, its a non-issue as you just get a FF harnessed booster.
I have triplets and have researched car seats that are 3 across friendly extensively. As I said before, the Combi is a great seat. It was our travel seat but my kids outgrew it shortly after 2 rear facing and not longer after that forward facing. For the price (we paid around $230 each) there are far longer lasting seats out there.
Some examples-
Cosco Scenera NEXT is $39 and will fit 3 across is most vehicles. Rear faces to 40lbs and 40 inches.
Radian R100, R120 and RXT's are very 3 across friendly, but do not always fit newborns. They also take up a huge amount of space front to back at the newborn angle. The newer Diono's are also slim, but wider at the top so not as 3 across friendly depending upon how much space you have to work with.
Graco Clones (MySize, Size4Me, Headwise, Fit4Me, Contender) are fairly slim and often fit 3 across. Will get most kids to booster age.
Clek Foonf and Fllo are very slim and 3 across friendly. Bonus now that they have an infant insert, so you can use them with newborns. They are also very long lasting and will get most kids to booster age.
Safety 1st Guide 65 is relatively slim and 3 across friendly. Downside is that it doesn't fit newborns and requires a steep recline for rear facing children under 22lbs.
Also keep in mind that seats often puzzle together well especially if you have a mixture of forward and rear facing kiddos.
