If you want to know where your children are at all times then stay home with them. This is a massive invasion of privacy. I would quit on the spot.

Are they going to pay the data charges? Those tracking apps use data unless connected to wifi and the cost can add up. I wouldn't be opposed to it while working but if I forgot to turn it off I don't feel my bosses need to know where I am. Plus if it's on her phone she could always turn it off while working or leave it at home and take them out. If someone is going to harm a child or lie where they are going they will figure out a way to hide it from their boss.

I don't think you understand how a salary works. Once you've done the work, it's yours and your call what to do with it. You've fulfilled your end of the bargain. Employer doesn't get to tell you how to spend it - whether to get a smart phone that can track you, or whether to get a basic phone, what kind of groceries to buy, whether to get a gym membership. None of your business. The money is now the nanny's because she earned it. Your employer doesn't force you to buy a smart phone or tell you which apps to install, right? Same for the nanny. You buy the phone if you want to control what's on it.

Yep. You don't get to dictate what your employee does with her salary and personal property, especially when it would be such a violation of privacy. If you want the tracker, buy a work phone and install whatever apps you like, block data during non-nap times, or whatever else you want to do. But it's not an employer's call what apps your employee has installed on her personal phone. Just like my employer can monitor my web browsing on my work computer but not on my personal one.

I wouldn't be ok with installing a tracking app on my phone. After a certain amount of time, I expect there to be trust.
But also, to have this app open and running all day is probably a huge battery and data suck. So I would refuse to put it on my phone.
But I tell my bosses what our plans are and threy trust that we are doing what we planned we'd be doing. If plans change, I'll text them to let them know.

I don't understand the nanny's employers motivation in asking for this. I tell my charge's parents what we are going to do in the morning and then we do it. They know approximately where we are going to be at any given time. For example I tell them that we will be going to the library for story time at 10AM but don't need to tell them if we are going to pick up the milk my charge needs before or after story time since it is contingent on how long it takes him to eat breakfast, get dressed, etc. I wouldn't care if they wanted to put a tracking app on the phone that they pay for but I can't see why they would even want to as they can always call me and ask me where we are.

Again, if I were this nanny I would ask "why?".

I would be mortified and HUGELY offended if my bosses did this to me.

Esp. since she has worked for them for some time already plus like you stated, she has put up with a lot from this family.

This would be the deal-breaker for me.

It's like they are telling her they do not fully trust her still and that is why they want to install this.

She is a grown woman. They are treating her like a bad child, one who cannot be fully trusted.

I think she should leave.

I'm speaking about me, not the other nanny. I wouldn't download the application on my own phone. I'm under no requirement to add memory suckling applications to my own phone. It's generally not required at any job to use your personal phone to load devices for your job unless you want to. I like the idea of asking for a dedicated work phone for this issue.

They should give the nanny a phone to use while at work.
She can leave it at the NF home at night.

I don't see the problem. Why can't mom and dad know where their child is throughout the day? An older lady is likely not too concerned with "privacy" like the younger generation, but if she is she can always close the application at the end of the work day.

I have a friend who is an older, lovely, trustworthy nanny. Her bosses are talking about her installing a tracking application on her phone so that they can see where the nanny and child are at all times. Thoughts? It bothers me on a gut level, especially since she's put up with a lot at that position, but remained loyal and hard working no matter what.
