In this case, I don't think you should pay the fee. She is electing to go because she wants to travel. All well and good, but if she wants to travel she should have a passport., at her expense. If you were requiring her to get a passport to go on required travel with you, then you should pay for it.

I agree that it depends on the circumstances. If she knew going in that a passport would be required for this job, then she should take care of it. if travel was never discussed upfront, then this is a cost of doing business that she was not aware of and could not have been aware of. In that case, you should pay for it.

But ultimately, it comes down to how badly you want your nanny specifically to be the child care provider during this trip. If she does not have the money in her budget, she may not be able to go. If that would be a huge disaster for you to find a temporary travel nanny than the cost of the passport application fee should be worth avoiding that hassle. If on the other hand you have backup plans in the event that your nanny is unable to be your travel nanny as well, then you could just use alternate childcare.

If the position is listed as requiring a passport when I apply, I expect to pay for that myself, but the family will pay for any trips (I don't travel with the family if I'm not working). If the family did not state that a passport was required when I applied, I would expect that the family would cover it, just like they are required to cover any training they decide is required after I start working for them that they didn't list beforehand. I had one trial period that I quit after a week because on the second day, MB gave me a list of 8!!! training certifications she wanted me to do within 3 months so that I could discuss the various discipline and parenting styles with her and help her decide what to do. If she had been willing to pay for my time, reimburse at least half the cost of the courses or allow me to use PTO days, I would have been willing to do it. But she wanted me to pay the $2k+ myself and have the classes in what little free time I had. She honestly didn't understand that it wasn't reasonable.

Yes, I would pay for the application fee since it is required that your nanny obtain a passport for her duties. Why wouldn't you?

We told each person who did a working interview that international travel would be part of the job. The person we wound up hiring went out and fired up a passport unknown to us, after hearing that. If there's a fee to re-new or whatever, we'll pay that.

I would pay for her fee. I'm the one asking her to get a passport.
