You shouldn't feel terrible at all OP.
You need to look out for yourself right now. You need to consider your own safety and welfare right now. I am glad you are getting away from this guy, no one has the right to get violent in any relationship.
I would just talk to your family about your situation. Let them know you have decided to end a very difficult five yrs. relationship and in order for you to move on, you literally NEED to move away from this person. Let them know that you wish you could stay on with them and your years with them have been wonderful.
However due to your current circumstance, you must move to another city.
Give them as much notice as you possibly can. Minimal a month would be ideal, but no less than 2-3 weeks depending....
As happens from time to time, be prepared for them to let you go earlier than expected.
Good luck and stay safe.

I'm sorry about your bf. and am happy that you are deciding to leave this.
I just told the family.
They were sad...and things will be uncomfortable for the next few months. But just spill it.
No way to get around it.

Good grief, you offered exactly ZERO solutions or advice but you had the presence of mind to attack someone who actually had something helpful to say? Nice. No where in that post did it say OP must say and do exactly that thing word for word. Presumably OP is smart enough to know if she needs to leave tonight, she'll leave tongiht, but if she can crash somewhere (even her employers) for two week or a summer or whatever, then she can do that too. couch surf with friends for two weeks. all it takes it two friends and a bottle of wine for each.

Explain the situation - no matter how embarrassing - honestly to your employers. They may well have a housing solution for you. But whatever you do, do not stay another night with this boyfriend. Violent men get most violent when they think you are leaving.

Subject: How to quit
So I need to quit my job because I am leaving my live-in boyfriend of five years. The relationship is horrible and he is even getting violent towards me. I live on an island in the north east where there is a housing crisis, there are just too many people and not enough housing. I feel bad quitting before the busy season gets started. How do I tell the family? How much notice should I give? I have been with them for three years. I want to make the transition easy for them..This news is going to come as a shock and I feel terrible!
