agree it was unfair. I would clearly tell them your terms- you'll do a share if you make 18/hour base rate plus overtime. final offer and of course be civil but I think it makes sense to make your counteroffer.

I agree wholeheartedly with you OP, your boss had no business negotiating a salary with this other family without consulting/involving you. This is a pure bonehead move. I strongly suspect they didn't confer with you because fundamentally they know they are trying to pull one over you here. What a common hustle.

Anyway, you should not be caring for another young child without a pay increase. And if your bosses seriously have an issue with this, then honestly...You need to seek another family because this speaks VOLUMES of their character.

Any family who would try to hustle their nanny, the person who gives them piece of mind every day so they can go to work without worrying about their child's welfare....IS just a miserable piece of work.

If they fire you for declining this absurd "offer," then they will be doing you an enormous favor in the long run.

OP here. I made a typo because I was thinking of $18 as an appropriate pay. It was an honest mistake.

To the other pp re him deciding terms before asking - I agree. The fact that he didn't even consult me beforehand is what frustrates me the most. Clearly they don't respect me enough to pay me more. I've only been with them for two months and plan to leave after lining something up.

What makes me more pissed is MB and DB both knew about this share but did not tell me until two weeks ago. It feels like they lied in phone and the in person interview. I am no longer finding them trustworthy or respectable. I will be leaving ASAP, hopefully.

I think the most outrageous part of it is that he essentially decided upon conditions of your employment without any input from you. It's up to you whether you want to nanny for a share, and at what rate, it's not up to him to make these decisions. You aren't a unit of cattle. You need to figure out a way to politely but firmly let him know that he has no business committing you to anything without your input.

No, it's not. Not at all.

People nanny for families with 2-3 kids for $15-$20/hr, so $18-20 for a share is normal and reasonable and expected.

I would start looking for a new job and cut my loss. It's crazy that they assumed that you would be okay with the same rate once another child was added on. They are selfishly looking to lower their end of the deal without looking out for you. get out now, you'll regret staying.

How do you repeatedly make a "typo" regarding your hourly rate??? Did you think the story sounded more believable at $16/hr?

That's what I thought too.

If I were you, I would print out a copy of the law requiring overtime for anything over 40 hours a week and find a few write-ups about nanny share vs. nanny for one family) and present them to DB. Explain that the reason that nanny shares are lower for each family is because they share the expense of the nanny, but your pay goes up because you have to work with two sets of parents who probably won't agree about everything, and that makes your position harder. Have a written list of what you expect from each family when both children are with you (reg. hourly rate and overtime rate both) and what each family would pay when only their child is with you (normal rate for one and overtime rate for one). I would let DB know that I would keep track of hours and email each family a bill on Friday night (assuming that you would still be working mon-fri), with the hours broken down into the 4 categories, and that you expect each family to be prompt with payment or you will be unable to continue the share.

Last week DB asked if I would be up for a nanny share, as his co-worker are interested in doing one with them and me. I told him I would be open to it as long as I meet and " click" with the parents. This morning DB tells me how I will be been making X amount more than I am now for OT with the other family. Essentially they are expecting me to care for a 3 and 5 month old at $18 per hour and then $18 per hour for the 5 hours I will be a single child ( OT). What upsets me most is DB negotiated my salary with the other family without even speaking with me first.

I told DB that I charge more for two kids and that I abbé to be paid OT after 40 hours. He said his co-worker didn't want to go higher than that and they don't plan on paying OT. I plan to tell them I do not want to do a nanny share at that rate but fear I may lose my job. MB and DB really want this and I think they may find another nanny more on board. Help me!

Your employers are being ridiculous - why would anyone double their workload for the same amount of money? And not paying overtime is illegal. Chances are they cannot afford you and have just realized it.

Polish your resume and get ready to move on. Keep it extremely civil with your employers but make it clear that a share at the same rate of pay will not work for you and that overtime is demanded by law.

Agreed.
