MB was insensitive but it's only for two days. Let it go and enjoy the little extra.

Well, two kids are not double the work, so expecting double the pay is sort of silly and will likely result in an attitude that will lose you jobs in the future.

What you are looking at is a temporary nanny share. If $12/hr is market rate in your area, expecting $16-18/hr for a temporary share is about right. You did everything right and honorable, OP.

Your MB, however, is just an insensitive jerk for her comment to you and if she regularly makes such demeaning and insensitive comments, I'd consider looking for a new job.

Thanks guys for the advice.

I live in San Diego, CA so not sure if this rate is fair or not since I do not know any other nannies in my area.

I agree that double the work is double the pay in most cases and it seems I am not alone in this belief. Obviously the other mother agrees. Her mistake is that she laughed about it like money wasn't that important to her.

If she were a nanny and in my shoes, her reaction may have been much different.

$12 in Southern California is extremely low.

Not in San Diego. San Diego rates are notoriously low because the nannies there are competing with a lot of illegal workers who will work for cash at much lower rates. $12-$15 is pretty normal. $18-20 is exceptional there.

EXCELLENT point PP.

While it is Southern CA, there are other things to take into consideration regarding what affects nanny rates. And the illegal worker theory is true.

Tell them you have changed your mind. Simple. Your MB is a jackass. I would be looking for a new job.

That was stupid of your employer OP. And that's the kindest interpretation. I also think it was potentially nasty and mean.

I agree that your hourly base rate is too low, though I think what you requested for adding the additional child is reasonable (I think double the rate would have been too much, but I wouldn't have blinked at $18/hr.)

You don't say where you are though, so maybe $12//hr is the going rate in your area. If you're anywhere in the DC metro area though then I think you're being taken advantage of and I think you should start looking for another job.

You need to up that $12 rate to at least $16. You're not in high school anymore.

These two mothers are laughing at your stupidity.

I'm sorry, OP.

I'm sorry op. Let it go.
I'd be upset too.

Double the work SHOULD equal DOUBLE the pay.

I currently nanny 30 hours per week for an almost two year old little boy.

I make $12/Hr for caring for ONE child.

Well my MB has a co-worker who has a child the same age and that little boy's nanny will be out of town for 2 days so MB asked if I would be willing to watch him along with her child. I agreed and when she asked me what I would charge for the two kids, I said I would do it for $16/Hr. She checked with the other parent and they both agreed on the rate.

Well when talking to my MB casually later on, she jokingly told me that both parents were going to just pay me $12/Hr EACH and that she was relieved that my rate was lower. She laughed about it, but I don't see the humor. I found it tacky and now for some odd reason, I feel super resentful that she told me that.

I wish I never knew because now even though I set the rate, knowing that they are capable of paying me more and would have has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Am I normal to feel this way....??!!
