If you were in a coffee shop and a stranger's child was crying inconsolably, would it be okay if the parent asked you if you could settle the kids down for them, NO CHARGE because they knew you were a nanny?

You should not be asking physicians for free advice. Call YOUR physician's office for an appointment like everyone else has to do.

Do you know how many times, as a nanny, a parent has asked for my advice regarding their child?
I've never once charged them for it.

If you are talking about parents other than those who pay you, then you are a sucker.

I'm trying to imagine how you think that conversation should go.
"NannyFriend, I'm having trouble getting Larla to sleep. Do you have suggestions?"
"Sure ParentFriend, but my knowledge isn't free. That will cost you $5. If you want the printed version, it's $10"

Sure, why not?

Considering that you have been with them for five years and have a good relationship with them, I wouldn't think your boss would have any issue "talking shop" with you.

If they did, then that would show how cheap they are.

Make sure your timing is good however. Not when the kids are being unruly or your boss is stressed or rushed.

Sure it's ok to ask OP. Doctors are very accustomed to these kinds of questions/inquiries. You're just asking for his professional advice, not for free medical care.

It's fine.

My previous employers were doctors I asked questions often.

OP here. After being diagnosed with quad tendinitis (by my doctor), he told me he wanted to double check the diagnosis and examined my leg. He then offered to write me a prescription for heavy duty Motrin, which I declined.
I don't think he'd mind, since he offered to examine an injury prior to this one. Thank you everyone!

I think it's fine. I doubt they would even think twice about it. If he feels weird, he would probably say something like you should go see your own doctor, but I doubt he will, based on what you say about the relationship.

I am a full-time nanny, but occasionally babysit.
One of my clients is an orthopaedic surgeon. Ive been having some pain in my ankle over the last week or two and would have to get a referral from my primary physician prior to seeing an orthopaedist. It would be a huge fiasco. Would it be out of line to ask my DB for his opinion on whether I should see someone for it? If it's something like tendonitis, I would rather avoid a trip to the doctor. I've been working for them for over 5 years and I have a great relationship with the family. I don't want to cross any boundaries.
Please be nice.
