I agree with the pps. Our nanny started with us when our son was 12 weeks. We mostly trusted our gut but there were several reasons.

- Our son was very happy with her. They have an amazing bond. He now crawls to her every morning when she arrives and gives her a huge smile.
- He is fed and clean when I arrive home.
- She seems happy and in a great mood too.
- Our neighbors and random strangers tell us how lovely she is. Some of the strangers thought she was the mom because of how hands on she is.

We trust her 100%. She tells us when he's bumped his head or she accidentally clipped too much of his nail, etc. Most importantly, he loves her. We never had a nanny cam. We use an app to track their daily routine.

Have you come home unexpectedly on occasion, or had guests in the home to observe (visiting grandparents for instance)?

Do you have a good level of communication w/ the nanny? One where you're having developmental discussions of when to start solids, or "look what she learned today", or when the next doctor's visit is, etc... Does the nanny alert you if she thinks she sees signs of teething, or ear infections, or anything like that?

Do you have a partner w/ whom the nanny is interacting and is the communication there equally comfortable and in line w/ what you observe?

What does your gut instinct tell you?

+1

Trust your gut.

Nanny cams are not necessary.

Because if your nanny is doing a great job all you have to do is look at the reaction on your child's face when he sees her every morning.

He should have a smile on it when the nanny arrives. If he seems to get upset, that would be a great indication that perhaps they are not bonding correctly.

+1 (except we don't have a dog). People kept coming up to me and telling me how wonderful my mother was with the baby -- my mother lives in California and our nanny is 60. They would be shocked when I told them that she was our nanny and rave more!

We have had several neighbors tell us how amazing our nanny was! People I didn't even know - but who had seen nanny with the baby during the week. Even when DS was very young, like two-months, he was so relaxed when the nanny handed him over to us.

You should be able to tell by looking at your own child, OP.

Other than a nanny cam, are there signs to know if your nanny is doing a good job and keeping your child safe (when your child isn't old enough to ask)? We have a nanny and there are no red flags, but I am curious from other nannies if there are signs to look out for. Thanks!
