+1 Ask your local police department for regulations on nanny cams and you can find out what is illegal. But there is no law that tells you what is legal. As PP said, there is no law that says that drinking water is legal.

Hacking happens but its up to the family to really secure down their network. It also is easier to hack with wireless camera's vs. wired.

? No, not at all. A homeowner can install nanny cameras in his own home and record whatever he chooses as long as the persons working in the house are notified. Otherwise, you have to check with individual state law. In my home state, you can video someone without their knowledge in your own home but cannot record sound.

But cameras are never allowed in bathrooms or an employees private changing room or living quarters (if a live-in).

Regarding cameras in the home, I have read a few horror stories on nanny cams.

I used to have no issues w/them and wouldn't have minded being filmed in my nanny job, however there have been a few stories in the news lately where a hacker has gotten into the cameras and can see the child and nanny together. In one the person actually could say something to the nanny and she could hear him.

Due to safety and privacy concerns, I wouldn't work for anyone who had cameras in the home due to hacking issues.

Just the mere fact that a complete stranger could be sitting at home watching me in someone else's home freaks me out. And in this day & age, it wouldn't be too hard to find out where I am located.

I agree.

Due to all the recent online hacking of these nanny cams, it is in the best interest of the family to avoid these.

Well if you have found information online saying it is LEGAL, then that is most likely what your nanny was asking for. So if possible, print out a copy for both you + her.

If she works there, it is a place of business. You sound exceedingly unpleasant.

The contract for my current nanny share clearly states that cameras will be present in the home. They are in obvious and common locations. The nanny has had previous employers who also had nanny cameras. Nevertheless, the nanny has asked me to print off for her a copy of the law permitting the use of nanny cams. I did some searching this evening and while it appears both video and audio recordings are legal in Virginia, I haven't yet found a specific law permitting this. Does anyone have any suggestions or know where something like this could be found?
