I'm the PP from above and I rent a condo so don't really want to give out the building name as there are only 4 units and none of them are renting now, so it wouldn't make a difference to you anyways. a friend of mine lives on Rhode Island NW right near north capitol and he lives in a house (I think there are 4 bedrooms?) and pays $700/month. he, too, lives in a safe area and has just fine housing. there are places all over DC that are safe and fit in your budget. it just takes time to sift through them all! best of luck

If you are working 50+ hour weeks and only bringing home $3000 ($900 = 30% of 3k) then I think your first order of business will be finding a new job that pays a fair wage for a nanny. $15 an hour is pitiful in DC.

Lots of safe areas outside of the district. OP wants to stay in the district, and realizes that's the more expensive option. Safety wasn't her concern.

...and it does. I take home 2500/month and as I said before, I live in a 2 bdrm apt with a roommate blocks from the Columbia Heights metro. I live in a safe area and have never once felt fearful. go away if you can't contribute to the discussion like an adult

I nanny in NW during the day and after school across the border in MD, it works out amazingly for me because I love the break and the variety (idk how you all do it 50+ hours with the same kid!) and I live in Georgetown. My apartment is $2000 a month which comes out to about ~35-40% of my income toward rent which is the recommended amount, all my other bills are covered between my two employers so I get to save a lot.

I do not have a roommate, have a really nice modern 1BR condo with granite, hardwood floors, etc, and all utilities included plus parking.

It's definitely possible.

I'm a nanny living in Columbia Heights who up until recently had a housing exchange that worked well. Because of my work week (50+hrs) I'd really love to stay in the area and avoid a commute. I know in general a nanny salary can't really support living in the district but I was wondering if anyone has any leads on cheap apartments or group houses etc.
