My child was not toilet trained until age 4.5. He has low muscle tone and couldn't feel the poops coming out. You wouldn't know he was not typical unless you were a physical therapist or an occupational therapist.

But he was small and short, I think about 35 lbs.

I don't see it as an issue. If the child was 7 then that would be strange to not mention. But at 4 I've nannied for two different 4 year olds who wore diapers.

Many of these children do in fact have a horrible problem:
NEGLECTFUL parents.
Sorry, but who cares if they're nice people?

That sounds miserable,. My patience with diapers wanes dramatically once the 3rd birthday rolls around. That said, perhaps he had a physical problem of some kind even though he was developmentally normal, mild spina bifida comes to mind.

Are we sure the child was developmentally/intellectually "normal"?

He made have had issues that were not apparent to you.

Regardless, very rude of the parents to not mention the child was not toilet trained. I agree with pp, they knew it was not normal and chose not to disclose it to you for a reason.

Ugh!!

They probably knew if they disclosed it to you, there would be no way in hell you (or anyone else) would take the job.

That is just disgusting and inconsiderate.

Sorry, but glad it's over and done with.

This isn't quite as gross, but I once (once being the key word) babysat for a family who informed me that I would have to rock their 7 year old daughter to sleep and allow her to sleep on me until they got home 6 hours later.
No. Way. Ever.

I babysat for a family who insisted that shoes never be worn in their house - and then their cat peed in my shoes!!

I sat for a normal six-year-old who still took a bottle before bed and liked to keep his hands down his pants and play with himself while he sucked the bottle. That was enough for me. Once time and done with that family.

I could not deal with a four-year-old, developmentally normal, child still in diapers (and pull-ups are diapers).

I am never working there again. But the parents don't think there is anything wrong with a four-year-old pooping in diapers so I could say anything.

I had a 3.5 year old last summer who never made it to the toilet ONCE in the two days I was taking care of him. The parents never warned me - never mentioned it. When they came home the first day I mentioned it to them and they said, "oh yeah - he does that with us too".

The kid stood in a massive puddle of pee when he went and refused to move. I had to go in and carry him out. And poops were especially fun...

Disgusting! And I am a mother of two and the employer of a nanny.

My kids were potty trained before they were 2.5. There is no excuse for such lazy parents.

Fun day today. I had to change the pull-ups of a very tall, developmentally normal, four-year-old boy today (including two big bowel movements). The parents never told me he wasn't toilet trained and, knowing his age, I never thought to ask.

Mother told me he wasn't ready and they didn't want to push it.

Never again.
