Well sorry but when you aren't spending time with your child, these things will happen and you should know about it.

I'm an infant nanny and I've gone through this many time. At first I would video and send to employers. Some became upset while others were upset they missed it but understood it would most likely first happen under my watch. Now I've decided to let them discover their " firsts". I have seen majority of milestones happen first and I tell the parents " I think B is getting really close to nail this milestone". I will come back the next day or on a Monday to see the proud parents gloat. What I find funny is how most roll take all the credit for their child achieving those milestones when it's me who put most of the work in. I don't mind though!

My charge had a speech delay and didn't speak until he was almost 3. Both parents were out of town and I was staying overnight the whole week. I skyped them so they could be a part of it.

Don't tell them! (Do the, "I really think she's close" thing).

Our last nanny kept telling me about "firsts" she was working on with DD (our third child) like walking, and it bugged me. I KNOW some things will happen first with the nanny, but I don't need it rubbed in.

No you don't tell them. You do what 17:35 suggested.
You do this even if they say in the interview it is ok.
I have learned especially with FTPs they think they will feel one way if X happens but feel totatlly different when it does.

I had one FTM MB tell me I could tell her if XYZ happened well she came home one day I was in the room with my little charge and she was close to rolling for the first time she came running in and the look on her face when she thought she had missed it told me everything I needed to know...

It can be true for more experienced too I've had parents of 3 or 4 kids get just as excited over the firsts.

If it's their first child and the baby only took a few steps I let them know at the end of the day that they tried to take steps and are so close. I encourage them to give the baby an opportunity to work on it so that way they see it first. I had one charge and his first steps were not your typical 3-4 and fall down he walked across the room the very first time. I told mb that he took a fee steps and let her see him walk across the room thinking it was the first time and she sent me a text and video to show and she was so excited. Now if this isn't their first child I ask in the interview what happens if they roll over, sit unassisted, take their first steps do you want me to let you know or keep it a surprise

This. If an employer gave you a hard time about not being 100% honest because you isnt tell them you saw a first step or whatever, I'd run like hell.

I wouldn't. Dh was away when DS took his but I knew he was excited to see his first step. So I didn't say anything an when dh got home from his trip the joy on his face when DS took a step towards him was adorable. I'm so glad I didn't take that away from him. He kept saying "I can't believe his first step was to come see me! Did you see that?!" It s makes me happy to think of that memorY

You have to tell your employers what your charge does. You are not the nanny to your employers - they are grown ups - and need to be informed of what their child does during the day.

...should I tell MB and DB? I don't want them to be upset they missed it.
