Yes - this.

Outside of the nanny world, "guaranteed hours" is incredibly rare. Whenever I am working with the nanny family, I make sure to have everything in writing, but particularly I make sure that it is written very clearly about what exactly is meant by guaranteed hours, and I also go over that section with them verbally and ask if they have any questions if they are a new nanny employer. It is possible that she is intentionally taking advantage, but it is also possible that she legitimately does not understand what it is that she agreed to.

Give your MB a chance to do the right thing! She may not have understood what guaranteed hours meant. And get a set schedule each week. If she is unhappy with the new understanding then yes - give your notice and start to look for a new job.


Stop thinking that you are "being taken advantage of" and accept that sometimes people simply do not understand/know the "rules".

Move on.

Put your work agreement in writing next time so you avoid this kind of misunderstanding/confusion.

I posted on previous forum about this new job I have taken. When I interviewed the lady I said that I'm looking for 22-25 hours a week and she said she would guarantee me a minimum of 22 hours per week with guaranteed pay. I've been with the family for three weeks and next week they need me to work until 11pm three nights next week which I agreed to. She then sends me an email stating that she wants to bank the un-used hours for that yime. Which means the last two weeks I have only worked about 16 hours then the following week I worked 17. I'm guaranteed 22 hours and whether or not she needs me I still get paid. She wants to bank up the hours that I didn't work to stay late etc. I feel it's not fair that I should have to stay late because I specifically said before taking the job I need 22 hours and she agreed. Now I shouldn't have to use hours from previous weeks for this. Yes in the real world you don't get paid for what you don't work for. Yet she agreed to this and it is the sole reason I took the job. Now I feel taken advantage of. I did send an email saying I don't feel comfortable with it. What do you guys think? I kind of want to find a new job because I do feel later down the road I may get taken advantage of.
