I have a friend who does this. She works as an ER doc, and her husband is a small business owner. They have two nannies/babysitters and guarantee each a certain number of hours every week (15, I think), but they often give additional hours. They give them a schedule every 2 weeks for the following 2 weeks. Usually if one can't cover the time, then the other can.

Both their babysitters are young and still live at home, so they aren't struggling to make rent if they only get the minimum guaranteed hours one week.

+1 It's a mutually agreed upon set schedule - which does also guarantee a certain minimum salary. We can ask nanny to work more than her guaranteed hours and will pay her for the additional hours but her payment for her guaranteed hours does not vary.
