I absolutely require vaccinations (including flu) for employment. My nanny has never had an issue with it.

I work administration for a hospital and am rarely around patients but it is a stipulation of my employment that we are all vaccinated and get a yearly flu shot. They offer the flu shots at work but, if you want to go to your own doctor, you must show proof.

No, it is not illegal to require vaccinations. I did with our nanny.

Legality-wise I am not sure, but who really cares? It's not like someone is going to sue you in court for not hiring them due to not having proper vaccines or refusing a flu shot, etc.

If someone refuses to get vaccinated or get the flu shot, then that is just a sign that you are not a good match for each other.

It only makes the selection process easier and quicker if you ask me.

Back again with links from when nannies discussed lying about getting the flu shot:

Same thread. On this page, the second and third posts.

I don't feel like searching anymore, to be honest.

I've never seen a nanny lie about having had a vaccination on DCUM.

I'll go searching and link to posts. Give me some time.

Absolutely. I did stipulate in the ad that vaccinations would be necessary. I made the mistake (so my nanny told me a year later) of not asking for proof of vaccination. Nanny said that she heard a group of nannies talking about how they lied to their employers about being vaccinated.

This is called a "heuristic" and is not the basis for making an argument. That the flu shot caused your flu is correlation, not causation. You were vaccinated for certain strains, and caught a different one. That happens. You were also probably a lot less sick than you would have otherwise been had you not received the vaccine.

Go play at Disneyland.

Are you going to force everyone in your office to be vaccinated?

No one is saying to force anyone, just not hiring someone who didn't get them.

You would not be breaking any employment laws; those requirements are perfectly legal.

You can require whatever you want.

Is it appropriate (and legal) to stipulate in our agreement that our nanny receive a seasonal flu vaccine and also be current on the rest of the recommended vaccines (i.e. TDAP, MMR, Chickenpox, etc -- either through vaccination or because they had the virus at some point in their life?)
