Severance pay, as others have said, is what is given in lieu of a notice period. They could tell you today is your last day and give you two weeks severance to ease that announcement.

Giving you one month's notice is gracious and should not come with severance pay. You should not ask.

If you are lucky they may choose to give you a gift of some kind at the end of your employment and maybe that will be cash. But severance is not called for in this situation.

Alternatively, if you do not work through the full month and leave earlier (if you find another job) you are not entitled to any payout for the portion of time you did not work.

I think you could ask for time during your work day to search for a new job.

+1 Severance pay is for when you don't give notice. Ask for a reference and if she's willing, to post a recommendation for you on the neighborhood parents' listserve.

I wouldn't ask for it if you want to use them as a good reference.

It may burn a good and strong bridge for you.

You are getting one month notice. That is plenty.

How part time are we talking? What's your benefit package like (guaranteed hours, vacation, etc)? Gives a little insight into how this conversation could go

My boss gave me one month notice due to the fact that they are relocating out of the area. How do I go about asking for severance pay? It was just a part time position with no contract.
