Then YOU can absolutely pay her a 2 months severance. Enjoy.

How much would I want? 6 months to a year. How much would I get? Unless I work for Google or something, maybe a month, and I've been there for 7 years.

You should not feel any guilt OP.

It is what it is.

It would be kind of you to continue to pay her health premiums for a few months so she can find something else as well as pay her severance, but these would all be out of goodwill of course. None are required.

If you feel in your heart that she did a fantastic job + went above and beyond in her caregiving duties to your child, then by all means feel free to do what you feel is appropriate in the situation.

You sound like an awesome employer by the way!!~

Two weeks severance and a glowing letter of recommendation is standard. You could pay her health insurance thru to the end of the month (February) but not beyond that.

If your child is starting preschool, your nanny already knows the end is near. I get very sad thinking of the day when our nanny will be gone!

You sound like a very fair individual...it gives me hope that, there are other families out there like you.

Two weeks severance is pretty standard IMO.

I think if you write a glowing review for her on your neighborhood listserve, that will go a long way. Think about the aspects of childcare that you care the most about - was your nanny good at those? Say so. I usually write something with a headline saying breastmilk-friendly or cloth diaper-friendly, etc. It can be surprisingly difficult to find some one who knows how breastmilk is supposed to be handled differently than formula, or find some one willing to work with cloth diapers. Those things make a candidate stand out, so kind of advertise for your nanny along those lines (or whatever lines she is good at - baby sing language) and she'll probably get a lot of calls.

I think my contract states that severance is in lieu of notice (this part was written by the agency).

I would consider this more of an end-of-employment bonus, and if you can swing it, pay her health insurance for the following month.

The most important thing will be to allow her to do what she needs to do to find a new job, which may mean doing a trial day here or there.

Btw, why haven't you already told her, so she can start the job hunt? Give her an amazing reference letter, and offer to help. GL.

I wasn't sure of our preschool slot until this past Friday. I absolutely will help with her job hunt. We hired her through an agency and I will do my best to pressure them to place her!

One week's severance. Maaaaaaybe a week and a half of it.

You better check with her health insurance company - there are laws about paying for an employee's health insurance when they're no longer an employee.

2 weeks severance is pretty standard. In terms of health insurance that is totally up to you. Also a nice gift on her last day and a glowing reference letter if it is deserved.

Our nanny has been with us for a year and a half. Unfortunately, we will have to let her go bc our child is starting preschool. I will be giving her over a month notice. What is an appropriate amount of severance pay? Also, we pay her health insurance premiums. Is it standard to continue paying those for a few months?

I am dreading this conversation. I think, to some extent, I'm trying to buy down my guilt. So please help me figure out what is reasonable.
