Yeah, it does suck when you truly realize nanny knows more than you do. I bet you thought she was much less intelligent than you are!

2102 here. It may be a poor fit for other reasons, but I still think she's mostly right about the safety issue. If you feel like her pointers are going to irritate you then you can certainly look into a nanny w/ different personality traits.

NAnny is right about the 1 yr old but not necessarily the 3 yr old. I wouldn't drive a 1 yr old around forward facing either, though at one time I did. Since then the recommendations have changed, despite the fact the laws haven't. The gov't recommends 12 yrs of schooling too, but more is better. Do you want your kids to go off with a high school diploma and call it good since that's all the government requires? The laws state the minimum not necessarily best practice.

The seat the baby is in can easily be turned rear facing and you can get the three year old a combination seat for around a hundred dollars. A combination seat is a forward facing only seat that has a harness and turns into a booster.

Do you also allow them to wear jackets in the car? Do you and any other passengers were jackets in the car? If you do you need to stop as it's not safe. A single later fleece is really the only one that is safe.

Laws are years behind. States are now trying to pass laws to rear face until age 2, start s booster at age 6, stay in a booster until 10-12 years old.

This information can be found online the American avademy of pediatrics as been recommending rear facing until age 2 since 2002 the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Association) the ones who perform crash tests on car seats and cars has been recommending rear facing as close to 4 as possible or they have outgrown their convertible seat (that's a seat that rear faces and towards faces) they also say kids aren't ready for boosters until age 6 because the belt usually doesn't fit right and children need to be mature enough to stay in the correct position 100% of the time this means no leaning, slouching, bending over to reach something even at a stop light, they lmow not to put the belt behind them, and stay in position when sleeping. Some 5 year olds are booster ready but they are far and few between. No 3 year old is capable of sitting correctly. Contact safekids.org and meet with a CPST which is a car seat tech. They go to trainings, take classes, help teach people how to use their seats, buckle the kids in properly, make sure the seat is the right one for your child, and will give you current information.

Even if it isn't a law why don't you want your kids to be as safe as possible? Your nanny would be liable if anything happened to them while driving and I could see you blaming her. So please do her a favor and Fire her tell her why you did because she cares more about safety and she needs to find a family that cares about safety and is willing to learn

OP here...if it wasn't safe there would be different reguirements.

I know this isn't the answer you want, but your nanny is totally right. I would also refuse to drive the kids with that setup. Since when is the MINIMUM the standard? Please educate yourself more on car seat safety. Your childrens lives are literally at stake.

I would tell your nanny that your children meet the legal requirements, and that you are satisfied with their safety. I would probably also try to reassure her that if there is an accident that you won't sue (as long as its not caused by gross negligence like phone use or DUI). If she still refuses then I agree that you're justified in deciding to move on- and I would make sure to bring up your carseat situation in interviews in the future.

We have a 13 month old and a 3 year old. We just hired a new nanny. She came highly recommended and had excellent references.

Today was her first day and we ran into a major issue. She says she will not drive the kids around because we don't have them as safe as possible in the car! Our 13 month old just got switched to a Britax convertible and our 3 year old is in a turbo booster.

Nanny says 13 month old needs to be rearfacing and 3 year old should still be harnessed! We just got the booster so we could give the britax to the baby. oDD meets the miminums for the booster and YDD is over one soshe can face forward.

What do I do? Should I fire nanny since she refuses to drive?
