A few colleagues use(d) White house nannies and were quite happy, both with long term nannies they found there (one going on 13 years), and short term childcare solutions.

I am embarking on my family's nanny search and starting there to get a feel for the market and get the figures myself. Fees are not anywhere near the au pair ones but they can be 10% of an annual salary, one-time fee.

I'm an MB and I was a little surprised that she said the agency rates usually top our around $20 (though she did say some are paid higher.)

In my interviewing experience nannies who came through agencies were usually quoting rates a couple of dollars an hour more than the nannies who came to me through referrals. But that's pretty anecdotal.

The agency fees are a deterrent to me when I'm hiring because they add significantly to the costs. I hired our permanent nanny (with us several years now) through a referral but have used agencies nannies for fill-in/back-up care and it always adds a fairly significant additional cost.

I don't think there is any 'right' rate, but I do wonder whether the agency fees have a detrimental effect on rates.
