I'm going to go against the grain and say in this scenario you should not go in, and your employers should not expect you to come in if they truly have the flu.

If you do go in and happen to catch it they should be very generous with sick leave.

If they really have the actual flu, I don't think OP should go. The flu effects everyone differently and can in fact be VERY serious. Caring for kids with colds or common childhood illnesses is one thing, but the flu is different. Are OP's employers going to pay for her medical bills if she needs to be hospitalized? The flu can knock you out for up to 2 weeks, it's stupid of them to ask her to expose herself.

I would buy a whole box of latex gloves and treat the place like you are in an infected area. I'm sure the doorknobs, knife handles and other things that the family is using have been touched by ill people. Protect yourself and ask about sick days if you get ill before your arrive.

If they're all sick I'm sure they desperately need your help and would hopefully (as 8:24 said) be appreciative and supportive of you if/when you eventually come down with it.

I didn't work on Monday and yesterday, I was off.

No! Runny nose and cough is one thing. A flu is completely different. I wouldn't want to go into work surrounded by that. No no no.

I say do it but go in knowing that yore probably going to get it. Wash your hands, don't cuddle, no sharing food...etc.

However, your bosses should be lenient with you if you do in fact catch it. I hate hearing about nannies who care for sick kids, catch it, and then are not given sick days.

This is your job. Children get sick as a nanny you should be used to it.

Yes, you should work when your charges are sick - makes no difference if the parents are there or not - this is your job.

- signed a nanny

Since it's a nannies job to care for the kids when they are sick you should probably do your job.

I always take care of my charges when they are sick and feel strongly that it is part of a nanny's job.

Wash your hands frequently today. Try not to hug or cuddle your changes and obviously don't share utensils or food.

My entire nanny family is locked out with the flu..kids and bosses....

I'm expected to come to work today and care for the sick kids, am I wrong for wanting to avoid that at all costs and be healthy? I don't think it's right to expect me to expose myself to six people with the flu.
