We pay $26 ($13 each) in Georgetown for my baby and sister's baby. Nanny has a college degree and a lot of experience. We interviewed less expensive nannies but none close to being as qualified as our nanny.

I believe it is illegal to pay overtime for hours not worked.
So you can gurantee the 40 hours and the pay for it but overtime only applies if the nanny works overtime hours.

My guess the reason $24 is being requested is because taxes are being taken out.

Do you have specific requirements for the nanny?

Certain IQ?

Advanced degree?

Multilingual?

There's got to be a reason multiple interviews are asking the same rate.

My coworkers & neighbors have $8.5-10 per family for a share with two babies.

You could always just post a job at the rate you think is reasonable and see who replies. If the replies aren't the caliber you want, then re-evaluate what you're asking and what you're offering, then repost the job.

I'm sure I am going to get a lot of snarky replies because I know this question has been asked before but what is the going rate for in NW DC for a nanny in a share taking care of 2 babies (i.e. each child is under 1 year old)? The reason I'm askiing is that in pervious posts on this board it seems like the market rate is around $22 but interviews almost accross the board the starting rate candidates are asking is $24. Pay is a above board. Thanks for serious replies.

OP, I live in your area and the average share rate for two kids is $20-22/hr. If there are more than two children, rates are more like $24-26/hr. Personally, I don't know anyone paying over $22/hr for a share.

PP is incorrect. You can most certainly guarantee more than 40 hours. I'm guaranteed 45hours every week. 40 at my base rate, 5 at my overtime rate. Any additional hours are additional overtime.

How will laundry work? Are you switching homes for hosting?
With 5-10 hours of overtime I'm surprised by the high rates. You should be able to find plenty of nannies at 18-20 base with overtime paid at time and a half. Are you actually interviewing nannies and they are asking for these rates, or are you going by what you read here?

I get $25 an hour for 2 not in a share in NW. If I was to consider a share it would have to be at $30 an hour to deal with all the extra hassle and such.

Consider yourself lucky you have multiple people only asking $24, thats a steal.

You can only guarantee pay up to 40 hours I believe. Overtime is paid if worked.
Your best bet for an accurate wage is to consult with those in your area. There's a wide range on this forum and it's not the most accurate.
If you have interviewed several nannies in the area that offer what you and the other family want and $24 is the common rate than $24 it is
You can counter with $22 and see what she says.
Or keep looking. $22 isn't unfair.
As far as raises you don't have to give $1 raise per year or at all if job performance doesn't require one.

The only standard raises are increase in duties and children, and if you are the other family has another child you'll likely be looking for a new nanny anyway.
Just my opinion for the hours you want you could probably find a good nanny within the $12 to $15 range just caring for your child. You would also save yourself and he headache of working with another set of parents.

Honest question how does laundry work in a share?

I've done shares before and laundry has never been part of the deal.

We are looking fir 45-50 hours guaranteed per week, 2 weeks pd vacation, all fed holidays and 5 days pd sick leave. Duties include caring for children and cleaning up after them (laundry, cleaning bottles, preparing food when they start to eat) but no houskeeping duties. I'm not quibbling over paying $24 I'm just trying to find out what the real rate is in NW DC. It seems from reading past posts that some people think $20 is the going rate others $22-$24. I want to be able to keep the nanny on long term and be able to give a raise if she works out so I don't want to start so high that we can't do that.

Yes more details would be helpful.

Where do you live?
What hours will nanny have?
Are you expecting additional duties?
What skills dfo you require nanny to have?

Although $12 an hour for 40 a week isn't that unreasonable especially if you will be withholding taxes.

Are you asking for a low amount of hours? Unless you're looking for 40 hours or less, I'm surprised people are asking for such high rates. Shares are usually $18-20 per hour to start.

If multiple candidate s in your area are quoting $24 than that is the market rate for the caliber of nanny you want in your area.

You might get to $22 by either changing your expectations
or negotiating to $22 an hour.

Often nannies quote a slightly higher rate to ensure they get the desired pay.

If it were me I wouldn't quibble over an extra $40 a week if it meant getting the exact nanny I wanted.
