Or, if something was vastly different (you'll be home with grandma, the hourly is lower than what the ad stated, the hours are different) then I'd actually say "I'm sorry, but now that I know the fuller information, this isn't a good fit for me." Either that minute on the phone or later via email. And don't waste your time and their time if you know going into an in-person interview you're not interested. Waste of time for all concerned!

I never have a problem with lying when the lie is kinder than the truth!

I do the same as PP - tell them I have accepted another position and wish them all the best in finding the perfect nanny.

Follow your gut - it never gets better than the initial phone interview when everyone is on their best behavior. You will find the right position. Stay honest and stay positive.


PS I have no clue why people omit vital information in their job postings. Do they think we won't notice Grandma or a lower salary once we start working?!

That's usually what I do but I feel bad about lying.

Things that make me change my mind like the hours being different that what's in the ad, mom doesn't want nanny to leave house with child, being grandma's helper and the ad doesn't mention grandma.

I turned down a perfect position about a month ago because they wanted to pay me 5 dollars lower than my minimum and didn't negotiate. I'm feeling like I'll never come across a job that's a good fit for me again.

I almost feel like I have to take all interviews even though I know in my gut it's not a good match.

What turned you off in the phone interview?

Also, I always ask them to exchange emails on the phone and send me a confirmation for when and where they want to meet. If I change my mind before them I just email them that I have accepted another job or am no longer interested and thank them for their time.

They usually don't write back and thats the end of it. Sometimes they write back saying they understand and good luck.

I'm terrible at this, so many times after a phone interview I know I'm not interested in the job but I feel bad about declining an in person interview so I agree to one. How do you do it?
