I've had three nanny jobs and I've never had to fight for my pay. In my current job, I'm paid weekly through payroll and it goes in every Friday morning. In addition, I get extra money on the first of the month for my health insurance/gas. MB had it set up wrong where instead of going in on the first, it took 3 business days to clear after the first. She was mortified and said she'd fix it right away (even though I assured her it was no big deal, I could wait for Monday for the money to go through). I didn't even bring it up - she just asked. Anyway, she was so worried about me not having my money on time, she made her husband pay me cash.

I would be annoyed as well.

I highly doubt they are living "paycheck to paycheck" because if they truly were living like a working class family, blue collar and all, they probably wouldn't be able to afford a nanny.

However, there probably isn't anything you can do at this point. It's not like you can force them to pay you on Thursdays.

Either you can quit over this issue or you just have to accept it and re-configure your finances each week.

Sorry OP, I just cannot think of anything else at this point.

+1. Paid in a "timely manner" doesn't mean that they have to pay you on Thursday. It means they have to pay you, period, at a time reasonably close to when you did the work. Some people are paid daily, some weekly, some every other week, some monthly. Some people are paid on the spot for work done that day, some are paid a week or two later for the work done in the prior pay period. All of those are "timely" payments.

And of course they can pay in cash, as long as it's the same amount you'd be receiving by check.

Our accountant told me I should pay the day after the pay period, so if the pay covers up to the end of the day on Friday, we should pay our nanny on Saturday. We do this via internet banking, though actually I often pay her on the Friday when I'm at my desk, it is is easier to get done then.

If your employers pay be cheque, they should be able to give you a cheque on Thursday that is dated for Friday. You should suggest that. If they can't do that. maybe you can suggest you be paid in cash on your next day of work.

I understand about the cheque clearing - it won't clear if you don't have a certain balance in your account, so that you have sufficient funds in case the cheque bounces.

I have tried to ask for a post-dated check and she refuses. There isn't much I can do if she won't pay me. I don't take cash and only pay by the books. That's highly illegal to be paid under the table.

I wasn't suggesting you not be paid on the books, but that if they can't give you a post dated cheque they give you your pay in cash instead on your next work day. Money is money, I don't think it's illegal to pay someone in cash if it's on the books.

Just so you know, a lot of payroll services pay with a one-week delay. So, how about you just pick up your check on Monday? Not everyone gets paid weekly. I get paid twice a month, for example.

Why does it take 2-3 days to clear? I've never had any check not clear and be available automatically .

I can appreciate they are paycheck to paycheck ( don't believe they are) but that isn't my problem. I deserve to be paid in a timely manner. It will take 2-3 days to clear so giving it on Thursday wouldn't matter. It's annoying.

Can they post date the check and give it to you Thursday and then you deposit it on Friday

That is probably when she gets paid and they are paycheck to paycheck. N

I just started with my NF this week. I work M, W, and TH. I am getting paid weekly via check. Even though my last workday of the week is Thursday, MB told me at the end of today I will need to come each Friday to pick up my check. I am on payroll but they are on a limited budget and don't want to pay extra for direct deposit. I told her it was an inconvenience but she said that's when they will get paid. Does this seem fair to you? I feel I shouldn't have to take time our of my day to get my check when I don't work on Fridays. I should be paid on Thursday.
