I agree with other responses - if you've one for surgery recovery, then you have two weeks left. I don't think its wise to ask for 3 weeks vacation still. I do understand why you're asking given your experience with them so far and not having had much vacation but reality is you have used the week - even though it wasn't for an actual vacation.

If your employers allow it, I would take one week plus a sick day for your surgery. That would leave you with two weeks of unused vacation and four more sick days, in case you need them during the year.

Two weeks is still plenty of time for a vacation, so you should plan one, especially if you feel a little burned out.

I can't really see how you can have three weeks of vacation when you need sick days that exceed the number you receive. I suppose you could use all five of your sick days and ask your employers for an extra day off unpaid to preserve your vacation time, but that is risky because if you need any additional recovery time or any sick time in the next year, you won't have it.

If you hadn't used your sick days for the year yet, then I'd assume your surgery recovery would come from that first and then your vacation for whatever sick days didn't cover.

You use up all your sick leave and when your sick leave is done, you use your annual leave. If you don't have either, you go leave without pay. Welcome to the real world. I doubt your employers can get leave without using their sick or annual leave for a surgery. That's life. Hope your surgery goes well.

Sadly, I think you used one for surgery. Unless you scheduled your surgery when the family would be out of town and not needing you. 70 hours a week is a lot...if you don't feel recovered from your surgery, you should probably try to take more time to rest. I had to use my vacation this summer for surgery, too. It sucks, but it's life.

I have worked for a pretty great family for over 2 years. I work 70hrs + a week. I don't have real contract with then (stupid, I know). I get 10 days of paid vacation a year. I get 5 sick days a year. Sometimes I get holidays off, sometimes I don't. I have only taken 1 sick day off in over 2 years for stomach flu, and I was paid.

Last year I took only 1 week of vacation, and my MB said I could roll the other week into this years vacation (so I will have 3 years).

My question is. I had to have urgent surgery, and needed to take a 6 days off to recover. I had a vacation planed for this time, but decided to use it for surgery recovery instead because I already had a replacement booked for that week.

My question is... Do you think I should be entitled to 3 weeks of vacation? Or did I use one for surgery. I'm still pretty burned out, and kind of need vacation.

OT- I get so mad at my Australian cousins who work their FT job of 35hrs a week, and then get 1 month off for vacation!
