It would be 40-50 miles per day total, 20 is my commute so that still leaves 20-30 miles for on the job which is still a lot considering the family lives in Georgetown so it is city driving. Thanks everyone

Does the 40-50 miles per day include your commute, or just the driving for the family? You don't get reimbursed for your commute.

And you did say you had taken Montessori classes. The special needs point was not about you specifically, but about how pay goes with the job, not with the person's qualifications. You don't get paid extra to be a bus driver because you are also a semi-pro racecar driver.

11:18 here. If the driving is included, I'd say the pay goes from excellent to "fair." If you se ok with that, Id definitely ask for less salary and mileage reimbursement. It's foolish, tax wise, for both parties to be paying $125 in taxable income to you that could be tax free. (Unless you itemize deductions, then you could claim it)

Just fyi OP, the reimbursement for mileage should be an easy negotiating point. Just as them to reimburse you for use of your personal vehicle while on the job, as per the IRS guidelines. This is designed to cover gas as well as maintenance on the vehicle.

http://www.irs.gov/2014-Standard-Mileage-Rates-for-Business,-Medical-and-Moving-Announced

This will feel like a significant increase in cost/compensation if it works out to $20-25/day of course, but it also isn't taxable income. So it could be a very strong negotiating tool if you would prefer a higher hourly rate instead.

The not being reimbursed for gas would be a deal breaker for me, regardless of the pay.

Do the children in THIS family go to Montessori school? I am familiar with Montessori, having been a Montessori student myself as a young child and also a parent of children who attended Montessori school. With children that age, unless those children are enrolled in a Montessori school, I don't really see your Montessori training as relevant or necessarily beneficial. Many Montessori schools for elementary don't want to enroll students that are not already familiar with the Montessori method/attended a Montessori primary program.

I second PP who said to make sure you find out specifics over the job. What will you be organizing/cleaning? Figure out the pre/post-tax situation with the pay, etc. I would say that $600 per week is more than fair for a job like this ONLY if they are also paying for mileage reimbursement to maintain your car and put gas in it. You could easily spend 25% of your income on gas if not!

Before you accept this position OP, make darn sure you get clarification of just exactly what this "organizing" will entail.

Because this could be a gray area. It could mean a simple organizing the children's bookcase to organizing a whole kitchen pantry and then the six car garage!!

Trust me on this...Get specifics NOW!! You won't regret it.

I drive a little more than that each day for my commute and it is miserable. Think very carefully before you take the job.

Yes, the pay is acceptable. Make sure you are reimbursed for the driving you do on the job (not your commute).

+1 as long as they are paying the mileage reimbursement. That's too much driving in your car otherwise. If they don't want to do the mileage thing, ask about a nanny car.

If you feel overqualified for the position, that's something else entirely, but as I told one nanny candidate, I'm not going to pay you $25/hr because you're trained to work with special needs kids. That's not a service I need. You're being paid the rate for the job that's there, not the one you're qualified to do.

How much would you get paid as a Montessori teacher?

50 miles a DAY? Are they paying mileage?

That sounds more like "light housework" than a real nanny/housekeeper position. Unless you really think they are going to add mopping, bathrooms, full laundry, and all the tasks that make up heavy housekeeping, that sounds like a really excellent rate.

You might be overqualified for the job, but that's really a different issue.

30 hours per week at $600? The family has 3 kids (6, 6, 10 and a little dog). Yes, all children are in school. 15 of the 30 hours would be spent on "organizing" the family's home, running errands, caring for dog and doing the kids laundry while the other 15 will be spent on picking the kids up from school and taking them to activities. I am looking at roughly 40-50 miles of driving per day in my own vehicle and I honestly think this is a split of housekeeper/nanny position so I am not sure if $20/hour is really acceptable. We have not discussed whether this is $600 before or after taxes, but I am leaning towards only accepting this job if it's in the ballpark of $600 after tax deductions. A little about me, I have a bachelors degree with 7+ years of experience and had taken many Montessori caregiver courses at Aidan. Currently work for a family who has a newborn and a 2 year old, prefer to work with kids at least 1 years and older exclusively. What do you all think? Thanks!
