Because in some countries you are a) not allowed to do certain jobs while pregnant (including those where you have to carry heavy things, pick up heavy stuff or deal with children / sick people) and b) are supposed to go on maternity leave in week x of your pregnancy.

According to a quick google search, the Netherlands expect you to go on maternity leave (zwangerschapsverlof) four to six weeks before birth. By law! And they even get paid their full salary for those weeks plus up to ten weeks after giving birth (bevallingsverlof).

Also, I would assume once you have your baby, you will not be an au pair anymore. If your family is supportive, I don't see an issue for you to continue until you either have the baby, or think your health is compromised enough so you can no longer work.

you should ask in the Netherland. laws may be very different in different countries and the US is notorious for giving mothers minimal protections. in many EU countries the pregnant women have a mandatory period where they cannot work, often about one month before the birth to 3 or 4 months after, it depends on the country. don't assume things are like in the US, because they are not. also, I assume that the au pair program may have some rules about this situation, and I would not be surprised if a pregnant au pair is sent home. there might be problems with your visa (you do not say what nationality you have), you cannot just stay in the Netherland without a visa just because a family is supporting you. people may have doubt about your story because a family looking for childcare is not likely to end up with a young mother and a new born (and no child care after spending $$$ for the program)

I'm working with a great host family in the Netherlands for around 2 months. Just now noticed I'm pregnant. The family supports me but obviously by law I will can't work any more once the pregnancy is advanced. Any idea about how Dutch would help me beign european?
