I did this too, though we had 8 hour days, so increments of 4 hours.

thanks for the two prior HELPFUL posters. I will continue with hours instead of days. Just wanted confirmation I was doing this correctly.

how exactly am I being cheap?? So if she takes "off" on the day she only works 4 hours (thus using up a whole day of leave), then you would be calling me unfair too. Can't have it both ways...

would it not make more sense to count based on hours instead of days?

we employ a nanny 4.5 days a week - 4 days 9 hrs and 1 day 4 hours for a total of 40 hours/week. We offered her 5 days sick and two weeks vacation. So when she uses it, it would be 9 hours on the day she works 9 hours and 4 on the days she only works 1/2 day. Is that what is usually done? If she takes off the day that she only works 1/2 day it doesn't seem fair to be charged a whole day... but at the same time, it may seem unfair if she never takes off on that 1/2 day i.e. if she only is sick on the 9 hour days she is going to burn thru her leave a little faster. I did make an adjustment for 5 days of vacation (we pick 5 and she picks 5) as they ended up all being on the 9 hour day (45 total) - so only deducted 40 hours from her vacation.

I want it to be fair all the way around so am just wondering if I'm doing it correctly using hours instead of days?
