Two weeks and they will still let you go immediately.

MB here. PPs are right - there is some risk of you being let go early.

But, a family that has employed someone who is in college is accustomed to working around the semester changes, etc... and if I were your employer I would be eternally grateful for this kind of notice and would absolutely work with you.

I'd probably just ask you to help me find someone else you know who maybe could fill in for a semester and then you could come back next term or something.

Basically, don't assume your family will screw you. It's true they might, but there are plenty of decent employers out there who won't, and an end/beginning semester change makes a lot of sense. There will be more students looking for a gig starting in January that fits their schedule (hopefully).

Good luck.

If you give 3 months notice they will let you go as soon as they find someone and you'll be screwed. Give one months notice at most, trust me. Once they find someone you will be gone.

It's only September most colleges don't have you finalize your schedule for Spring Semester until early November.

Things could change a lot between now and then.

I would give no more than 4 weeks notice

That is plenty of time to ind an afterschool sitter.

Giving over three months notice is more than enough.

It is very nice of you to want to tell them as soon as possible, and I would likely do the same thing if I was with the family long term and had a good relationship, and trusted they would keep me on until January. But there's also the chance that if you tell them now, they will find someone new and get rid of you before January. So it all depends on your relationship and how much you depend on the income from this job.

I have been with my NF for a little over a year, and at the same time am a full time college student. Unfortunately, I could not work out my school schedule next semester to coincide with the time I need to pick up the kids. (Both are in middle school, work from 3:30-6:30 pm with them.) I feel very guilty giving them a notice, as both parents have very busy professions, and I know looking for someone new is hard and takes time. I want to tell them now, and am willing to stay until January. Is this fair? I feel bad that their search will be in the middle of the school year during holiday season. Thanks in advance!
