I understand your concerns. There is no need to react emotionally, just be professional, polite and firm. Let them know your rate is a firm $XX/hour. Thank them for their time and let them know that if they're able to work that out, you'd love to watch their little ones. Be pleasant and you could have an extra family added to your list. Be nasty and you could get a bad review that drives away ten more.

This is common, the least I've accepted while sleeping is $10/hour

Then walk out.

Another MB here. I would never pay less when a my child is sleeping. That's an insult to the sitter. Don't let them get away with such nonsense.

And that's the thing a professional does. There's all kinds of ridiculous jobs out there. Best thing to do is just say pass.

I usually ask them if their employer pays them half their hourly rate when things aren't as busy.

Ask them if they'd like you to do half of your job should the house catch on fire while the children were sleeping.

That's awful. I'm an MB and I pay one rate. Now, if I know that the evening is only 30 minutes of awake time and 3 hours of just being there, then I'll probably book one of my cheaper babysitters. If it's a couple of hours of full on childcare then I go for someone at the higher end w/ more skills/experience/etc...

But either way it's an hourly rate no matter what it or isn't happening.

$4/hr is just flat out insulting.

I'd never pay less while the kids are asleep.

I've only had that happen once, or maybe twice but luckily it came up during the email process so I never met them. I said I charge for my time being away from home, not for what i'm doing with that time.

It is probably more common than you think. There are those who believe you are not working if the children are sleeping. Are you just supposed to ignore the kids if they wake up or will the parents pay you normal rate if the little ones wake up during the night?
It is crazy and those families are not worth your time.

Is it common now for parents to try and pay less while their child is sleeping? I've interviewed with TWO families who have brought this up. One was a full time job and the other is a date night job. The date night job family wanted to pay me $4/hr after the kid goes to bed at 8:00pm. I'm really pissed because they made it sound like they were ok with my rate, so I waste my gas and time to go to their house for an interview only to find out after an hour of talking that they only payed full rates while their kid was awake. They also didn't even try and ask me about it, they just kind of told me that is how it was going to be. Seriously!
