It is not impossible to lactate without giving birth, the OP is not necessarily a troll. Adoptive mothers sometimes have induced lactation, which is a combination of using hormone treatment and pumping/stimulation. Prolactin is a hormone that can lead to lactation and it could be that the OP's hormones were already out of balance, with the exposure to the baby causing further hormonal disruption. I am an adoptive mother and I know that when I brought my babies home I experienced some depression and other heightened sensations that were probably hormone related and kicked in as part of a kind of maternal biological instinct.

Yes, this does happen on occasion, and yes, it is bizarre. It's been known to happen on rare occasions with grandmothers, too, which I find even more unusual. It may be linked to the long days you are working, but either way, your doctor should be able to address it. There's no reason you need to share it with the family (though as an MB, I would think it was a kind of interesting/cool thing to hear about--but then, I also know two people who've gone through the process of inducing lactation so it's not as foreign to me, and I understand the biology of it and wouldn't find it problematic or threatening, as some of the PPs seem to assume an MB would...)

I work with babies a lot and had this happen- but I don't believe it's because of my work.

I had a tiny pituitary microadenoma causing it and no other symptoms.

You are definitely a troll, OP. Your tell was what you say your Dr. told you. We both know that.

Of course, it's curious to consider why you would write such an obvious troll post. Obviously, you are trying to suggest a nanny is as important as a mother. So you are strumming that old nanny line about nannies being primary caregivers. Of course, usually this line is followed by an argument advocating $35+/hr for one child because nannies are pretty much mothers.

Nannies are not mothers of their charges and never will be.

The other weird thing about your post, though, is it trolls nannies who care so much about about their charges that they do feel like co-parents. You invite them to share their experiences in being as close, or closer, to their charges than the parents are. Since we both know there is a vast difference between a parent and a nanny, one has to wonder if you are soliciting stories to mock nannies.

No matter what your aim, your result is the same. You are an absolute dirty troll who, on top of everything, has no research skills beyond wikipedia.

Go away.

I think it just means you really care for the baby a lot and are experiencing those maternal feeling! I'm sure this is rare but I definitely believe it's possible. I was very close with my last MB and we went through a lot of ups and downs when she had problems at work and with her husband, I realized that our period had synched up. This is common with female roommates or close friends and is totally natural.

I started my new position with a newborn when she was barely two days old. I have her 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. She is almost two months old now, and everything has been great.

A few weeks after I started, I developed PMS like symptoms; lower abdomen pain and swollen and sore breasts. I assumed I was starting my period several weeks earlier than I usually do. I woke up one morning, and thought I had some sort of breast infection. My grandmother had breast cancer, so I was terrified. I was so sore, swollen and what I thought was a very small amount of pus was coming out of one of my nipples. I immediately schedule and appointment, and was absolutely terrified.

Long story short, it was a very very very small amount of breast milk. I have never in my life been pregnant, ever. I ended up starting my period a few weeks later than I originally do, and I guess I also set off my ovulation The doctor I saw said it happens sometimes, but usually only women who have given birth before...and usually in cases like with adopted children. I was mortified at first, and felt like a freak. I googled to see if any other nannies have had this happen, and found nothing.

I did find a few articles about how woman can sometimes randomly start lactating if they spend a lot of time around babies. It's a tiny tiny amount, and I was given some medication to stop it and all the pressure on my breasts is gone.

I just felt very strange, and I know it's a long shot but I was wondering if anyone else had this happen. I guess in a way it's pretty cool, I mean the female body is so interesting.
