With our part-time nannies (20-25 hours per week on average), we gave one week's paid vacation time per school cycle and up to three paid personal days (could be used for whatever including sick).

If a federal holiday fell on her work day, we had the option to make her work or not. 99% of the time, we didn't.

I was PT in college and received these benefits. As it turns out, nannies have bills too! If you want her to guarantee her time to you, then you need to guarantee her pay. The sick, vacation, and holidays should reflect her weekly schedule. If a holiday falls on her workday it should be a paid day off. If it doesn't fall on her workday it would not effect you. You may negotiate holidays based on your paid holiday schedule.

I would likely agree to three paid sick days and the major Fed holidays if and only if they fall on her workdays.

I would also offer prorated vacation time. For three days a week, I would offer six days vacation, three her choice and three mine.

I probably would not offer guaranteed hours for a P/T position. I have never had a P/T nanny expect that. I think it is only a DCUM nanny phenomenon.

That said, if I took an extra vacation day or week, I'd give it as a paid time off. I just wouldn't guarantee P/T hours.

I worked as a pt nanny thoughout college. After getting burned once, I always asked for (and received) guaranteed hours. This was usually my only benefit (no PTO or sick days of my choosing- if I called to cancel I didn't get paid) and most families were quite willing to offer it. So definitely not a rare phenomenon.

When we were PT we pro-rated everything but kept it consistent with overall norm for our area (FT gets 10 days vacation, 5 days sick--so 60% time would get 6 days of vacation, 3 of sick). And yes, paid for time you are away. We paid for holidays that fell on a work day but not for others, but I was PT at my office for that same period and they handled it by paying 60% of all holidays (vs. 100% of holidays that fell on a work day and 0% of others) which is a different approach. Also take into account whether your three days are 24 hours or something more than that (if you have longer days) and pro-rate accordingly against a 40-hour work week.

This sounds reasonable. She is probably cobbling together a FT salary through your PT position and a 2-day/week position; it makes perfect sense she'd want guaranteed hours. Losing ~30hrs worth of pay in a week would be tough on any hourly employee. If it were one day a week that might be different, but three full days is a very heavy PT schedule; to hire a good/experienced nanny for that you'll need to offer most, if not all, of those benefits.

Paid holidays should only be ones that fall on working days, and vacation should be prorated as a pp said (six days).

Then a lot of nannies who are depending on a regular paycheck would say hell no to your position.

I don't know if this is standard or not but I would think some level of prorated time would be reasonable. Maybe paid holidays and paid days if you're away, only when they fall on her scheduled work days of course. Three sick days seems reasonable if 5 sick days is reasonable for a 5 day a week position. But I'd also think there is some room for negotiation.

For instance, a Tu/WedThurs schedule wouldn't have many paid holidays but one that includes Mondays would get lots of the federal 3 day weekends. So you probably need to look at the specifics to see just what the cost/benefit would be.
