Really helpful.

You need to account for the fact that whoever you hire will presumably be expected to take care of your school aged child any time that they ARE NOT in school (sick days, teacher in services, vacations....). If you want this person to be available, you need to negotiate that into the rate or come up with two rates, one for child A only and one for A & B. This tends to get overly complicated, however...

Do a search of the forum, there are a lot of things I don't really know that you have even considered here. Live-ins seem like a great way to save some money, especially if you feel as though you have the space, but in reality are just not a good fit for most families, particularly ones who have never employed a nanny at all.

Agree with the $10-30/hr. range.

That is a fantastic package. If you are in DC and have one child, you should offer $12/hr (because your accommodations are a part of the package and an absolute perk.)

How many kids? Ages? Location?

Their take home pay depends on their withholdings. Don't worry about that. Pay between 10-30 per hr. Decide what you can afford. Use a tax service like Breedlove now called home pay.

Really? YOu advertise for a position with no idea of how much you plan to pay (and therefore whether you can afford it)?

Seems crazy not to have some idea going into it...

We are considering hiring a live-in nanny. We could offer the following:

Decent size room with en suite.
Health insurance
four weeks paid vacation
40 hours per week contract but that builds in flexibility for us to get home late so probably more like 35 hours of work
Time and a half for any overtime.

What is the going hourly rate for a live-in? We'd pay tax but I am a bit confused by all of this since we have never hired a nanny before so if anyone knows the going rate both before and after tax, that would be super helpful (so I can have a conversation with any potential nanny about what their take home pay would actually be).

Thanks in advance for any help.
