8 to 5pm 4 days and 9 to 1pm for the last day?

I'd take it!

Four days a week (so most days) uou'd need to leave your house at 6:30am, and you'd get home at 6pm best case, sometimes 6:30pm. I do that now because I work a longer day and have a shorter commute. But then on that 5th day you'd work a half day, so could do your grocery shopping, laundry, clean your house clean, pick up drycleaning, make your doctor's appts, blah blah so you'd have the weekend to yourself without all those nasty jobs that we all have to do when we work full time. And you wouldn't need to take time off your job to go to the dentist or doctor for regular checkups. Again, I'd take it! And do ask if you can stay over (do you have any kids or pets), when the weather is really bad.

Again, I did a 1.5 hour commute both ways (1 hour under the most best case scenario in the world, which happened 10 times) for 6.5 years. The long commute wears on you, I won't lie, but if you are making lots more money than you would otherwise make, then you just get great books on tape, or listen to your favorite radio station, and suck it up!

Can you move a little closer?

I would be hesitant to hire you unless you absolutely guaranteed me you would make it, rain, snow, or shine, because I know that commute could get to be a problem. I think you might come to resent that expectation, particularly when it would mean leaving in the freezing cold and dark in the middle of winter, but it's an entirely reasonable expectation for a boss to have.

The thing is, they aren't going to offer extra compensation for a long commute or weather, because that's just part of getting to work. In fact, you should clarify the IRS reimbursement thing. Most employers do not reimburse for the commute (i.e., drive from home to work), only for driving while *at* work. The IRS also does not allow you to write off the expense of your commute (driving from home to work and back).

This sounds like an excellent position, and they will be able to find someone who lives closer if you don't want it.

Do you have a family yourself? Would you be willing to stay overnight if the weather is bad?

Try to find routes and times that are most advantageous to a faster commute (good for you and easier on your car). Even if you get to work earlier than you'd like, use the time to sit in your car and pay bills, answer email, plan your day... Get books on tape or get into NPR. Use the extra income to buy a second language CD set.

Is public transportation out of the question? I used to commute 1.2 hours each way when I lived in Chicago but could take the train and looked forward to two plus hours of quiet reading time to myself.

They want someone with a car, and I would receive the IRS rate for using my car. The agency that I am working with keeps telling me that they are wonderful people and they really make their nanny feel appreciated. This excites me to no long because my current bosses are nothing but job creeps - reason why I am moving on. The hours are 8-5 for 4 days and then 9-1 for 1 day a week. They promise amazing benefits, bonuses, and raises over time.

Think about in the winter, OP. Imagine driving that commute in the snow.

Because remember it isn't only about the gas, you will also be putting a lot of mileage on your vehicle as well in the long run.

Is there any chance you can get a similar paying job closer to where you live at?
.

I live about an hour outside of DC and there are positions within my city but they do not pay nearly as well. Most of the positions that I find that are local to me through care.com only offer $10-15/hr which is a HUGE pay cut. I am currently commuting 35 mins to work for a $20/hr job. I do have a newer car that is great on gas but I'm also worried about that - I don't want to run my car into the ground.

As a MB, I specifically picked someone who lived close by so we wouldn't run into issues like that. No more than 20 minutes away.

Personally, I do not commute more than 30 minutes. I know traffic can be bad sometimes and I definitely have had days where my commute was unexpectedly longer but that's my general rule. I work 10 hour days as is so with my commute that's an 11 hour day, 5 days a week. I need unwind time in the evenings and time for running errands and doing things around my home.

That's a tough commute OP and only you can decide if the money/fit/opportunity is right for you. If you do accept though I'd suggest talking through options w/ the employers for how you will handle bad weather (especially in the winter if you're somewhere where snow is a possibility), whether occasionally staying overnight is an option you would want, whether there is the possibility of a trial period to see if the commute is manageable for you, etc...

Good luck.

I've been offered a job that pays $24/hr with benefits and potential of a raise when family grows. It's for a set of twins who are two years old. My only concern is that I'll be traveling at least an hour both ways if traffic is just okay. For those of you so do commute, how far do you commute and is the pay really worth it?

I travel 1.75 hours in to work and 1.25 hours home.

Hope that helps you, OP.

Thank you.

As you must know, every situation is so different. You need to consider the big picture for yourself.
