It just seems deceitful and can start the relationship off on the wrong foot if nanny finds out. I wouldn't be too pleased if my employer secretly video taped me (there are cameras as key points in the hospital where I work, but we are told about them).
So if I tell nanny that cameras are there and where they are, if she's the type to abuse a child, she'll go somewhere where there are no cameras.
It's my responsibility as a parent to do whatever I can to get a trustworthy nanny. This means references, background checks, fair wage, treate well and a basic trust. There are far fewer abusive nannies out there than there are good.
Exactly why you shouldn't tell. This isn't like the one episode of malcolm in the middle where the family comes home and reviews the entire nights recording of the babysitter, the point of hidden nanny cams is that when your young child has bruises and can't speak and nanny says she does't know how they happened THEN you can finally go to the tapes and go back to see what happened. Because of that reason I don't feel bad about having hidden nanny cams, I don't feel I am invading her privacy because I am not reviewing the tapes, in fact I have not yet once reviewed the recordings because I have had no reason, but I would without hesitation is DS ends up with a hand print on his back or something.
