Hopefully he doesn't get hurt while I'm here but I can't promise that since I will only check on him every 30 minutes.

This is obviously saying what a person who hires a nanny for minimum wage deserves, not what this nanny is actually like. +1

Pretty sure you are just as ugly and nasty at $15/hr.

+1. If you are for real then find another job. If you can't find a job that pays more than minimum wage then there is something wrong with you. Regardless of how you feel about your employers saying "Hopefully he doesn't get hurt while I'm here but I can't promise that since I will only check on him every 30 minutes." about an innocent child who has no control over his cheap parents is disgusting.

Let me guess you have cable with hbo cinamax and every other added movie channel, go to the spa weekly, get your hair done for $500, mani pedis weekly, yet can't "afford" to pay someone who will be teaching, caring for and loving what should be the most important thing in your life

I'm sorry but I have to look at things more rationally, not just go with what society says at this moment. Nannying just isn't a job that requires a lot of effort or skill and it should be paid as such. It's basically babysitting with longer hours so the rate should be $8-10 an hour, no more. Look at it this way, being a garbage person is a tough, physical job, with hazards and the smell is awful plus it's not a proud job, you would think it would earn more than like $8 an hour but it doesn't. Same thing with being a nanny, it's a simple job for younger folks (or really old retired ones), it is not something that should be someones career. Just because you never moved on doesn't mean I should be supporting you for $20 an hour to babysit my kids.

Actually garbage men make more then min wage. It's a state job and they do alright.

Nannying is not just physical it's mentally and emotionally challenging. I'm not a nanny but I'm a mother and I wouldn't want someone ignoring my crying child because they're exhausted and frustrated making min wage yet working long hours. Babysitting is much different so get a clue. You are so lost!

+1

State employees (like garbage men) make a middle class income with good benefits and excellent retirement. (Your ignorance always astounds me, and we always know when it's you.)

Please tell all the SAHMs you know that caring for children and a household 10-12 hours a day isn't worth more than minimum wage, I'm sure they'd LOVE to give you their take on that. In the meantime, I want my nanny to feel appreciated, respected, and well compensated so on those incredibly long and challenging days she can take a breath and remember she's a valued employee and will give 110%. I doubt you get that level of dedication when you pay $8/hr.

Can you ask her where or how she found her? Has she ben happy with her? We are looking for a new nanny.

Your "friend" sounds like a completely selfish and inconsiderate snob OP.

If I were you, I would have no qualms telling her like it is.

I would tell her that as a working nanny, I am offended beyond belief that she would pay someone peanuts for watching her most precious "asset." Yeah..Her child. Should be more precious than her diamond collection. Or her vintage wine collection.

I would also tell her that karma has a way of never forgetting a soul and that if I were her, I would sleep every night with one eye open because you just never really know......

She might want to cut one eye off of her monogrammed silken sleep eye mask there.

That's really nasty of her, OP, and very telling in terms of how much she values her quality of childcare. I was talking to my boss about another nanny we know who works for a VERY wealthy family but only makes $10/hr (I earn twice that plus benefits) and she was horrified that a mother as rich as her would cut corners on childcare. My bosses have a good income but are far from rich, and they prioritized child care above all other expenses. Just one of the many reasons I love working for them!

Of course, the flip side is that this nanny I know figured out she was grossly underpaid and gave her notice and now, two months later, the mother still hasn't found anyone else to take the job. When the same thing happens to your friend I hope you take the polite but honest high road and tell her what it takes to keep a great nanny.

Just a vent! My friend comes from one of the wealthiest families in the US. She lives in a major metropolitan city. She just hired a new nanny to take over from the baby nurse. She has to pay legally and on the books. She decided to BRAG to me that she just hired a nanny on the cheap. She went on to tell me she is going to pay this nanny minimum wage of $7.25 an hour gross!!! I informed her that the minimum wage is now $8. She seemed unpleased about that fact. She then went on to tell me that the agency she used said she would not find anyone willing to to the job for less than $15. The person she is hiring is legal, 20 years old with 2 years nanny experience. She is currently attending college. I feel very upset with my friend seeing how little value she is putting on the person who is going to help raise her child 60hrs a week. I'm venting because I'm a nanny, and I feel she was bragging in part to put my career choice down. She often suggest that I need to find a real job. I'm a little jealous of her as well, having all the best things handed to her on a silver platter. I want to advise her new nanny about what she should be paid. As a friend, I guess she isn't doing anything wrong, just being cheap. As a nanny, this makes me maaaaaaad!!!
