How is this petty? How would you like something our yours that is less than a month old to become damaged? If it was a $200 item, I wouldn't be that peeved. But this is a brand new car that costs well over 20k!

Pony up and get it fixed, but ask the parents to cover the cost of car seat covers so that there is no more damage.

MB here. DC' nanny uses her own car, as that was what she preferred over us buying another car. We pay the IRS rate which covers gas plus normal wear and tear. We also give her a car detailing package so she can have her car professionally cleaned as well as an extra $1000 a year to cover any small things that can occur when driving two kids around. I know she's used some of it this year when DS scratched her car trying to be "helpful" and put his sisters stroller in the car. All of that is still cheaper than us having to buy a new car so figures it works out pretty well.

I can imagine how you feel. The damage would not have occurred if you were not a nanny driving someone else's kids around in your personal car. However, this is a gray area because it is not normal wear and tear and the person best situated to prevent the damage was you. How can the parents prevent a piece of mulch from getting stuck to the kids shoes during the day and the kid tracking it into your car and the mulch getting jammed under your seat and then digging a hole into the fabric? I really get it, I would be peeved about it to. I just would not find it logical to charge the parent for it.

Can you tell them that going forward you need some sort of insurance against future damage? Perhaps they pay a monthly amount for cleaning and maintenance that you can choose to use or bank in case of damage? If you never use it then you can certainly pay it back at the end of your employment.

I think you can ask them, just do it nicely. I understand your mad, but you won't get far if you act pissed.

This is why nannies should NEVER use their own personal vehicles.

I can see this happening if the mulch was in the shoe and the child put their feet on the seat and it fell through. It can add up completely. It probably got wedged into the interior from the child's constant movement during multiple rides in the car.

Really who did it? Like OP realllllly knows the answer to this. Her car is damaged due to a child's (whom is not hers) seat. Your employers are basically renting your car and it is damaged due to their use. They should pay to fix it regardless of who installed the seat.

The damage is due to a piece of mulch. It was jammed into my seat and probably is from the child's shoes at the park.

You can ask in a nice way, but it sounds like they must not have been installed correctly

Who installed the seats? It's possible they were installed incorrectly

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a new car that I use for work along with personal use. Yesterday, I discovered that there was a significant hole underneath the car seats. The stuffing and padding is coming out if the hole as well.

My question is, would it be out if line to ask my bosses to pay to fix this? I'm really upset because this is a brand new car that now is damaged.
