While you may think you are a good person, why did you take out credit, loans, or sign up for services that you couldn't afford?

People with good credit are generally respectful and honorable people. People with bad credit are the ones lacking the moral compass to pay back loans and credit. I would trust someone with a good credit history to honor agreements, provide notice when quitting, be on-time, and yes, not steal. Sure, people can have a great credit history and then be bad people. Anyone anywhere doing anything can be a bad person, but I think a credit check is a good tool to use in this situation along with an in person interview.

You have no problem with my seeing your credit history either, correct? How else would I know if you'll pay me on time, or if you have money problems?

Sure if you want to pay me to run my credit I would be happy to do that (you have no reason to need my SS#, so I would run the check on myself and show you the results.) If you want me to run a free credit score I can do that but it won't show you much. If you asked me to do that I may not have a problem with it, but since you have no good reason to know it would just tell me you are very petty and I would be unlikely to hire you. So if you ever plan to ask a potential employer for a credit check in response to them wanting one on you, you better be really special and a good value or they will go on to someone less petty.

Most nannies have no reason to agree to this, unless they are also the family bookkeeper. Period.

They probably thought it wouldn't hurt to ask, but I'd now be concerned about boundary issues with them.

I'd move on, OP. This is a red flag.

I get really tired of the "if you have nothing to hide, then..." argument. I don't have anything to hide, but that doesn't make it your business. I'm not ashamed of my body. Does that mean I should freely show it to anyone who asks? No. There is no reason for a private nanny employer, hiring for a typical nanny job, to need to check my credit. You can get enough information about my character from my references. I'm sure they'd be happy to assure you I don't steal or beg for money. If anyone should have to undergo a credit check, it should be the people claiming to be able to afford my salary.

I can see this being fit ONLY if the nanny has something to do with the family's finance. Some may argue that it shows the nanny's character which will in turn show how responsible she is and everyone wants a responsible nanny, right?

Agree with the stipulation that you get to check theirs too...aftr all, isn't their financial stability a bit more of an issue than yours (seeing as they are the ones who are paying

No ones requires that of nannies. I'd say sure, as long as they let you pull their credit reports. You need to make sure they'll pay you as promised. Why should you trust THEM??? Right?

Hi guys,

I had a fantastic interview this evening and I felt as if the family and I would work perfectly together until they asked to check my credit. I don't feel as if that's any of their business. I'm afraid that I'll lose this job because I don't want them to pull a credit report. Any advice or should I just forget this family and move on?
