"1) Does everyone just pay taxes on the portion that they paid the nanny per year ? YES - YOU EACH PAY TAXES ON WHAT EACH FAMILY INDIVIDUALLY PAYS THE NANNY

2) Hosting - we have shared for many years with various famlilies. Only 1 wanted to share the hosting. Hosting has not influenced our salary splits. The host family bears some added expenses from hosting but also gets the benefit of having it in their house. It kind of evens out, provided that you have a family that is keen on hosting (i much prefer hosting since I never have to pack stuff for the kids).

3) Non-host family usually sends food for their child. That said, they will mix food some, so hopefully you get a family that is ok w/ sending a bit extra since they recognize their child also occassionally eats some of host family's food.

4) in our case, nanny gets 2 weeks vacation w/ 1 week to be set jointly by the families. We have simply talked with the other family - and taken nanny's preference generally into account - in selecting the overlap week. The other week is nanny's to use as she sees fit.

I think a 3 way contract is very useful for a FT share so you are all on the same page. I also second the importance of guaranteed hours in a FT share. Both families need to commit to the share hours being x to y on specific days and paying for that time whether they use it or not. In a share you can't really shift hours (like have nanny stay an hour later than the normal block of time because you came late that day) easily since she still has to work the standard hours for the other fmaily so it just makes her day really long.

I read a lot of things online suggesting a three-way contract but have not had anyone do it. Both times I had separate agreements with each family. In fact they shared very little - not food or supplies or coordinating vacation time. Thus, guaranteed hours were a must for me.

1) Each family pays taxes on their portion of her wages. I recieve 2 paychecks each pay period, and 2 W-2's at the end of each year. Tax wise it is 2 jobs.

2) In each share that I have worked, my salary has been split equally between families, as there are trade offs to being either host or non host family. You can share hosting in any manner that you like, or designate one host family. As a nanny, I abhor switching houses constantly and would not consider such a share again.

3) Non hosting family typically sends their own meals and snacks, unless I go shopping to prepare meals, in which I give them the receipt and they split the cost.

4) I recieve 2 weeks of my own vacation, of which I am free to schedule as I please. My families typically take vacation in addition to my own, but they are under no obligation to coordinate it with myself or the other family. I have guaranteed hours, so I recieve my full weekly salary regardless of if both children are present for the full schedule. It isn't vacation for me if I still have to be at work with the other family's child.

I'm considering setting up a nanny share but I'm confused on several issues:

1) How does each family divide taxes? Does everyone just pay taxes on the portion that they paid the nanny per year or is there another way?

2) For families that host in their house, do you pay more of the nanny's salary or less? How do other families do it? One week in one family's house and one week in another? Or do you alternate days?

3) Does the family who isn't hosting provide meals or snacks for their child or is their some joint grocery bill?

4) How is the nanny's vacation time divided up?

Thanks!
