Agree with the majority consensus here. MY MB, for example, would want to cook whole meals during the day whereas before she just left their lunch in the fridge for me to warm. During one bout of homemade bread making I swore my arms were going to fall off from rolling. It was fun for her to have DH in the kitchen but I definitely did all of the cleaning and the most tiring/tedious tasks.

We're having our second this fall and are giving the raise for baby #2 as soon as we get back from the hospital. I want to have the option to have her take care of both when I need it - it would be wrong to ask her to do that and to not pay her for it.

Definitely give the raise immediately.

MB here, and I would give the raise immediately. Even though your nanny won't have full responsibility for both children while you're home she will have to deal with you being home!

Seriously, it's a PITA for nannies to have family underfoot all the time. It's a smart investment in the long-term relationship to just start the raise as soon as the baby is born.

I have been given raises by different families when the baby was born. Even if MB or DB are home, it still is more work for the nanny.

Even if the baby isn't the nanny's responsibility yet, my staying home with a new baby was distracting for the older one and there were definitely times nanny had to step in to assist me with something as I had a fairly complicate delivery/recovery. Even though nanny wasn't responsible for the baby yet, it definitely changed the nature of her job and DH and I felt she should be compensated accordingly.

As a nanny, I would expect the raise to begin when I was actually responsible for both children.

However, please be aware, OP, that your being home with a new baby may bring up behavioral issues with your older child that can be very, very hard on a nanny. Your older child may feel jealous and want to spend time with you, he/she may stop listening to your nanny, and/or there may be regressions. You and your nanny need to be open and on the same page to make the transition easier for everyone.

I honestly don't see why you would raise her rate. If she requests a raise that is a discussion you can have, but to just do it seems a little foolhardy.

That raise should begin once you make them baby her responsibility. If she will be helping you throughout your maternity leave, which it is unlikely that she wouldn't, it should start when the baby arrives. If you truly mean, and will follow through, for her to have nothing to do with the baby while you are on leave, then start it when you return to work. I would suggest at least paying an increase rate for any hours she has both children, even if it will be a rare occurrence. You could give it as a bonus at the end of your leave, which is always a PITA for a nanny.
