34 to 36 hours is how horrible employers get away with not paying benefits in large corporations. I know that is not what you are doing, OP, as you wrote that 34 to 36 hours is actually the only need you have.
The nanny should be considered full time and get all full time benefits. 18 an hour is a good starting salary but I wouldn't take the job without benefit of sick days/personal days (34 to 36 hours worth) as well as being paid while you are on vacation and federal holidays when you are home with the baby. $18 times 36 = $648. Your nanny should be guaranteed $648 every week regardless of your vacation plans and federal holidays.

You are so close to asking for FT hours, why are you cutting it off at 34 to 36? You should give her/him the full benefits, otherwise you will most likely be looking for another nanny.

OP here: We only need a nanny for four days a week as that is what I work. I was hoping that maybe at 18 an hour I wouldn't need to offer full benefits - but you are all probably right. I'd really like to find a nanny who is happy working for us and good to my child so I will offer full benefits.

Yes, you need to offer your nanny paid federal holidays as well as sick days and vacation pay. 34 hours is basically full time and most nannies would expect all benefits.

If you don't want to pay her every time you don't need her, she'll get herself a real job. Unless she doesn't really need the money to begin with.

That's basically full time. The normal benefit apply. Part time, to me, is less than 30 hrs.

MB here. That's not far off full-time hours. I would offer the usual benefits. Apart from federal holiday pay, you could offer the additional benefits on a pro rata basis, i.e. if you would normally offer five sick days for a 40 hour week, you could offer 85% of that, which would be 4.25 days. Yes, if it were me, I'd pay her when I was on vacation, and I'd also offer her paid vacation, again on a pro rata basis.
