My charge wore the helmet for six months and it was not an issue for her at all after the first few days. She never minded wearing it but would object a little to having it put on or taken off at first. In my charge's case, the helmet worked GREAT. Her little head is perfectly oval now. For a week or so after she was finished with the helmet therapy, she'd reach up to her head and ask for her "tat" (hat) so clearly she it never hurt her.

Yes, you do need to clean the helmet well and wash the baby's hair every night (the only time she was without her helmet). You also need to watch out that the baby does not get overheated in the summer. We did our walks in the morning and late afternoon last summer and I kept her inside in the AC during the hottest part of the day.

And be very careful about your baby throwing his head back when he's on your lap or in your arms. Those helmets could easily break your nose!

My eight-month-old charge wears one. He doesn't even seem to notice it's on and his head is really filling out where it needs to.


And to PP - that was a very limited study based on one cause of flat-head syndrome. And not all helmets are prescribed for simple flat-head syndrome. It's already been disputed, even n the limited cases studied, by the Mayo Clinic.

Wasn't there just a news piece reporting that they have zero benefit?

Make sure you leave it on for 23 hours, taking it off for bathing and changing clothes. Clean it when it's off your LO. I think it was rubbing alcohol (???can't remember).

I posted the same query on the parents message board but know that many of you nannies may have more experience with these helmets on your changes than the parent do especially in the first few weeks before the charge begins wearing them at night.

How did you get your charge used to the helmet? Did he/she fight it? Any tips?
