I checked out tha VA criminal records link and from the looks of it OP can not use it, as she isn't a listed entity with needed access as a private employer although Virginia Power is!? Why the hell does the power company need background checks on people? Or is that just their employees.

Thanks everyone, very helpful except for the one rude person who stated she cannot believe I did not ask her the rates, yikes, thanks, not nice. Actually, she has her rates listed on care. Com and it was a very broad range. I guess I should clarify she is more of a babysitter than professional nanny. She is out of college 2 yrs ago and is just getting started in her career and is only working part time at her regular career job for at least the next yr so she needs to take a second job. The last 2 sitters I hired also did not tell me their rates and they still worked out well, one girl got married and moved away, the
other is FT teacher so cannot help me in the summer or at 12 pm in the fall after preschool is done so that is the only reason she is leaving.

Also, what is the going rate for summer care for a 4,8 and 10 yr old. In the fall it would only be the 4 yr old, so should the wage change? Lastly, how do you do your nanny taxes, do you use a service or do it yourself? Thanks so much. We are in Fairfax County, VA.

This is the link to the Virginia State Police's information for criminal background checks: http://www.vsp.state.va.us/CJIS_Criminal_Record_Check.shtm

Your nanny's rate will be dependent on a lot of things (experience, education, certs, and her financial needs). For 3 kids with your age ranges I would expect anywhere from $15-$20 per hour (and yes, that is before taxes).

In the fall your nanny's wage does not change just because your older two will be in school.

I highly suggest using a service to at least get you set up for employer and nanny taxes. You will pay the employer share of social security and medicare taxes and you will pay the federal unemployment tax. Your nanny will pay her share of the social security and medicare taxes and can withhold additional money from her paychecks (just like you have the option of doing). At the end of the year your nanny will receive a W-2 so she can file her taxes.

Hope this helped

I can't believe you haven't asked her about what she charges. If you did and she said something like, whatever you want, she can't be much of a nanny.

OP isn't in CA. She's in VIRGINIA.

How experienced of a nanny is she? If she doesn't have a lot of experience, you pay her on the lower end of the scale, but if she has a lot of experience and glowing references, I could see paying her $18-20 an hour.

On her care. Com she advertised $10 to $25 an hr, but we have not discussed further, obviously 10 is too low, but is $25 too high? Also, can I use livescan here in VA does anyone know? I tried to look it up and did not have much luck. Thanks

I'm in California but I used Livescan - it's a federal fingerprinting system.

No, the nanny's rates shouldn't change for autumn if she still needs to be on call if one of your school age kids is home sick or has a teacher-conference day off.

In CA we use a service. Hopefully someone can come along and give you the name of a service in VA. It is much easier and takes the salary out of our checking account and direrectly deposits it in hers.
