My MB loves house plants so we're making a butterfly planter using the kids footprints.

You can to be nice and it is a lovely thought OP.
But you aren't obligated to do so.
I do not know the extent of your relationship w/your MB, but if it is close, then what a lovely thing for you to do for her.
I wouldn't embarrass her by purchasing her a gift, instead perhaps make something handmade for her such as a nice card, maybe with a picture of you and the baby in it. Maybe have a picture of the baby holding up a sign that says "Happy Mother's Day Mommy!" or "I Love You!"

My charges always make gifts or whatever.
That are 22 months (twins) & 6 month (twins).
This year its flower pots kid painted (and I'll put their hand prints on top of their painting) for the older ones and hands and feet of the younger ones. I'll have the older ones help me fill the pots with dirt and flowers.
For fathers day its mugs. Older kids paint younger ones probably feet. It's easier then the hands.

For all of my first time moms, I get a 3 photo frame (8$ from Michaels) and take 3 separate photos of the kid(s). Photo 1 has them holding a large letter M (or propped next to), 2nd photo is the letter O, 3rd is the letter M. Then I frame the pictures in the frame and bam, done. I do the same for Father's Day with DAD. All of my parents have loved it.

I'm not very arts and crafty but that is a great idea! What did you use for ink to get the baby's hand-print?
Craft store, office supply store. I wouldn't buy a gift for anyone who was not my mother or grandmother, but a card with the baby's handprint is cute.

I'm an MB and I don't expect the nanny to do anything for Mother's Day, however, we had a nanny in the past who would do crafts like that with the children for me and it was really sweet and thoughtful. It doesn't have to be difficult or elaborate. Most parents would love anything their children "made" for them.

Please don't. Just say "Have a great first mother's day" or something. I do not need more cards, more mugs, more crap. It's kind that you want to do something but verbally acknowledging it is plenty. We run a minimalistic household and don't want clutter.

This is my first full time nanny job and this is my MB's first Mother's Day.
On one hand, she isn't my mother so why should I do anything? (I don't do anything for my friends or sisters who are mothers on Mother's Day either) On the other hand, I wouldn't have a job if my MB hadn't become a mother. Obviously my change is a baby so I cannot enlist him to make her a card or gift.
Is it customary or even appropriate that we nannies acknowledge our MB on Mother's Day?
