Hmm. I am a current DC MB. For what you describe I would expect to pay between 16-20/hr. so 16 is on the lower end, but still within market rate. If this family is willing to accommodate your school schedule and let you prioritize studying instead of housework during naps, then I think the lower rate is justified. You can also ask for a raise after a year.

One thing though - I am a bit concerned you are depending on being able to study during nap time. That may not give you enough study time if this baby is not a good napper. I general many newborns take short naps for many months, so you may just have 30 or 45 minute windows for studying.

I can’t think of any other field in which people with such disparate educational backgrounds could make the same amount. But I guess it makes sense. I just have to find parents I REALLY like and a family that will allow me to focus on my school work. There is a HUGE value to being able to study during nap time.

As long as you keep in mind that some kids don't nap well. Some days they might be sick and not nap at all. It helps that you'll be working part time so you'll have other hours to dedicate to studying. I wouldn't count on being able to study every single day though. Just my 2 cents.

The BA will be an added value to some families and not to others. However, you are much less likely to get a top rate if you want to focus on studying during naptimes. I'm not trying to get into the whole housework thing, but simply the fact is only expect a to rate to go to someone primarily focused on child and family centered activities during naps.

You know hardly anything about OP, so I'm not sure how you can say this so definitively. $16 is an acceptable rate for a single newborn, but as with all nannies and nanny jobs, there are far more factors to consider, and only OP knows what is "fine" for her.

Not for just one newborn. For more than one child you could get more.

But it's part time. Part time hours usually mean a slightly higher hourly rate.

That's true. So maybe 17 or 18 max but I still think $20 would be really high.

they're offering guaranteed hours. 16/hour seems so low to me because before i was paid under the table 15/hour. i moved here from NY and most families don't pay nanny taxes.

$16/hour is a decent rate. Are they offering any other benefits? Will they guarantee your hours? Will you get paid holidays that fall on a work day? Will you get any sick days? If all they are offering is a straight pay for hours worked situation, I'd counter with $18/hour.

I'd like to know the going rate for a PT nanny for 1 child ( newborn) in DC. They need about 20-30 hours/week.
I am trying to decide whether I should accept a rate of $16/hour. I have 5 years experience as PT nanny. I'm
also starting graduate school in the fall. Thanks so much!
