That isn't much better.

I hired a nanny with a "disturbing the peace" misdemeanor. Her explanation was that it was a spat with a boyfriend. It turned out that this was just the tip of the iceberg. The nanny had a hard time with having her authority challenged. She lost it when someone suggested she discipline a child differently. I would consider it a red flag unless it was just a minor, auto-related misdemeanor (expired registration).

It would definitely defend both on the offense and on the time that had passed. A violent offense would be a deal breaker for me, especially if it was against her own child.

I would go ape shit if I found someone taking advantage of an underage person.

Nope. The girl was in a relationship with the guy. They were having sex. Legally it's the guy breaking the law. The woman hit the girl. Makes no sense. Deal breaker.

I would be more comfortable if she hit the man, not her daughter. I'd be concerned about her parenting skills (but anyone's child even with the best parent can act out) but give her credit for disclosing it. I would probably pass.

Its possible to handle the situation without violence, and the cops needing to be called on YOU. The daughter was a willing participant. She was not in any true physical danger. She was not being attacked. You call the cops, kick the guy out, etc. but what would getting belligerent do, besides make you part of the problem?

MB here. A misdemeanor on a record, especially one that is honestly disclosed, would not necessarily be a deal-breaker for me I don't think. But it certainly isn't an asset.

As a pp said, an adult who will be caring for my children who has sufficiently poor anger management to have a misdemeanor on their record for hitting their child would not be attractive to me.

I just don't think I'd feel comfortable with that level of known violent capability. The daughter didn't just call the cops, the incident resulting in something on the woman's record - so it has to have been significant.

I think it would depend on the charge and the circumstances. A relatively harmless youthful indiscretion on the record of a 30 year old with an otherwise great employment record, sure I'd hire her. I would not hire the same 22 year old because it speaks to a lack of judgement and maturity that she hasn't outgrown. An older nanny that lashed out in anger and violence to the point that the cops had to be called is not someone I'd trust to control their temper, depending on how recent it was and what she has done since to grow. Probably wouldn't hire that nanny.

As I mentioned, I am not going to hire her. I was posting out of curiosity as to whether this would be a deal breaker for others as well, given an otherwise good interview and good references.

Yes, it would be a dealbreaker, in the same way that a nanny should not consider an employer who had a misdemeanor on record.

Would you hire a nanny who has a misdemeanor? She was honest when asked if she had any criminal convictions. It sounded like an extreme situation -- she caught her teenage daughter with an older man and lost it, and hit her daughter. Her daughter was afraid her mom would go after the boyfriend, so called the cops. I have to admit, if any situation were to make me lose it, that would be it.

I am going to pass on her because that is just too much for me, but I am just curious what other parents think. Her child care references are good.
