I don't have advice, but I could have written this exact post. We are also thinking of having one of DH's cousins stay with us for the summer and be a nanny for our kids, but thinking it will be less than full time b/c both with be in camp most of the time.

Yeah, I'm going to talk to her about it, but she is majoring in a child related field, has a number of much younger siblings that she has cared for most of her life, and other related experience, so I think she's probably pretty good as far as this goes. She's just too sweet to negotiate herself a good deal, and I don't want to take advantage. I think she'd be psyched to have the weekends free to explore the big city.

Maybe $10-12 an hour for someone with no experience.

50 hours is a long work week for someone who has little to no experience in the field. I would be concerned that she will be burnt out a month in and you will be left in a bind for the rest of the summer. This may seem like an ideal solution, but have you really had a realistic and honest conversation together about everyone's needs and expectations? Only you know this person, but this seems like a pretty tricky situation to navigate, at the end of the day, you are still family and this could really compromise relationships.

I'm considering asking a young relative who is a college student to be our nanny this summer. She'd stay with us and be like family, because she is. She has never nannied before, is from a small town, and I think is pretty unsophisticated, do I don't think she has any idea what to ask for. Obviously, I want to be at least fair. We've got thre kids but two will be in camp most of the day. What's the going rate for non-relatives providing this kind of service?? Thanks! We've had nannies before, but only older, experienced nannies who don't live with us.
